    Position Summary:
    Utah State University Extension invites applications for a faculty position as a Professional Practice Extension Assistant Professor.  This is a full-time, non-tenure track, 12 month appointment. The successful candidate will work closely with Extension specialists, county agriculture Extension faculty, and the Produce Safety Coordinator from the Utah Department of Agriculture and Food to provide technical information and trainings related to the FDA Food Safety Modernization Act Produce Safety Rule. This position is funded as part of a 4-year contract with the Utah Department of Agriculture and Food and is subject to annual renewal of funds, contingent on continuing federal appropriations and completion of yearly contractual objectives.  Funding is anticipated through June 30, 2021.  This position will be housed in the Department of Nutrition, Dietetics and Food Sciences on the main USU campus in Logan, Utah.  The anticipated start date for this position is October 2017.

    Coordinate Produce Safety Alliance grower trainings, and assist with their delivery throughout the state.  This includes, but is not limited to, making logistical arrangements, ensuring that adequate materials (workbooks, certificates, etc.) have been ordered, and promoting trainings to local produce growers.  The selected candidate must attend (or have previously attended) a Produce Safety Alliance trainer course to obtain trainer credentials (this training will be provided after hiring).
    Work closely with the Utah Department of Agriculture and Food to create and maintain an inventory of Utah farms, as required under the FDA Produce Safety Rule.
    Conduct on-site farm readiness assessments or walkthroughs with Utah Department of Agriculture and Food personnel, and assist Utah produce growers with developing farm food safety plans. 
    Assist with the development and maintenance of an Extension Produce Safety website, publications, videos, and other media to disseminate information to produce growers.
    Provide on-site demonstrations of proper irrigation water sampling techniques.  As funding permits, this may include supervising student technicians to conduct initial water quality assessments of major irrigation water sources throughout Utah using FDA approved testing methods.
    Communicate with Extension county faculty to coordinate outreach activities and provide updated information.
    Attend state and regional meetings related to produce safety, and stay current with regulatory updates pertaining to the FDA Food Safety Modernization Act foundational rules.
    Together with Extension specialists and Utah Department of Agriculture and Food personnel, identify, prioritize, and act upon arising issues that may affect the ability of Utah produce growers to comply with the FDA Produce Safety Rule.

    Minimum Qualifications:
    Master’s degree in Food Science, Horticulture, Agriculture Science, or closely related field
    Education or experience in food safety issues associated with fruit and vegetable production
    Ability to communicate complex regulatory requirements and scientific information in a manner that is easily understood by the layperson
    Must possess strong written, verbal and interpersonal communication skills
    Must have or be able to obtain a valid driver’s license

    Preferred Qualifications:
    PhD in Food Science, Horticulture, Agriculture Science, or closely related field
    Experience with program development and/or delivery related to food safety in fruit and vegetable production
    Experience managing budgets
    Knowledge or training related to the FDA Food Safety Modernization Act Produce Safety Rule, Preventive Controls for Human Food Rule, or Preventive Controls for Animal Food Rule
    Experience with conducting audits for Good Agricultural Practices or other fruit and vegetable production certifications
    Ability to speak Spanish
    Prior experience with the Land Grant University System
