Duties and Responsibilities
This is a 12-month tenure-accruing position that will be 40% research (Florida Agricultural Experiment Station) and 60% teaching (College of Agricultural and Life Sciences-CALS/Herbert Wertheim College of Engineering-HWCOE). Tenure will accrue in ABE. Duties will include: (1) coordinating the Biological Engineering (BE) degree and curriculum; (2) contributing to teaching in the Biological Engineering (BE) program through strong and relevant undergraduate courses in areas important to the candidate, students, and to the continued growth of this program; (3) advising and mentoring undergraduate students; (4) planning and conducting a high quality, externally funded and productive research program in the area of candidate’s research expertise and supervising graduate students; and (5) contributing to the Department’s overall goals in scholarship and research. Scholarly publications in refereed journals will be expected. The successful candidate is expected to develop a funded research program in their area of expertise and assist in transferring technology through collaborative work with extension professionals. The faculty member is expected to embrace all three missions of the Land-grant university system and will be expected to teach at least three courses each year. The research and teaching FTE assignment may change in accordance with the needs of the unit.

The ABE BE program currently includes four concentrations – Biosystems Engineering, Land and Water Resources Engineering, Packaging Engineering, and Agricultural Production Engineering. The candidate will contribute to teaching and research in one or more of the four concentrations. The candidate will also contribute to the BE ABET accreditation process by working with faculty leading this effort. The candidate is expected to engage with the HWCOE, coordinate recruitment activities for engineering students, and represent ABE on the HWCOE curriculum committee.

Because of the IFAS land-grant mission, all faculty are expected to be supportive of and engaged in all three mission areas-Research, Teaching and Extension-regardless of the assignment split specified in the position description.

Required: A doctorate (foreign equivalent acceptable) in Agricultural and Biological Engineering or closely related field is required. One degree must be in an engineering discipline. Candidates should have demonstrated skills in verbal and written communication, interpersonal relationships, and procurement of extramural funding. Candidates must be supportive of the mission of the Land-Grant system. Candidates must also have a commitment to IFAS core values of excellence, diversity, global involvement, and accountability.

Preferred: Skills and experience directly related to collegiate program coordination and teaching engineering curriculum are greatly desired. The ability to work effectively in an interdisciplinary manner with faculty from departments outside the incumbent’s home academic unit is essential. Knowledge and experience with new trends and techniques are desirable. Postdoctoral and other professional experience including teaching experience and/or engineering education are highly desirable.
