Jack Hamilton Endowed Chair in Cotton Production

WORK LOCATION: The position will be located at the Tom H. Scott Research, Extension and Education Center in Northeast Louisiana. A partial appointment will be held in the LSU Department of Entomology in Baton Rouge.

NATURE OF WORK: This is a full-time 12 month, tenure-track position with 80% research and 20% extension appointments. The individual selected for this Chair is expected to develop new and/or improved technologies associated with management of arthropod pests in field crops, with an emphasis on cotton. The research program of the recipient must contribute to improving the productivity, profitability, and environmental stewardship of the Louisiana cotton industry, thus contributing to economic development in the state. Other Louisiana field crops share pest problems with cotton and an integrated systems approach should be incorporated into the overall research efforts of the successful candidate. The extension component will focus on implementation of pest management programs for arthropod pests of cotton and other field crops in northeast Louisiana. Opportunities for research and extension activities exist at two research stations in the Northeast Region and in the Department of Entomology on the LSU A&M campus in Baton Rouge, LA. The Regions’ field stations include over 1,000 acres of land for research and extension demonstrations focusing on agronomic production and integrated pest management of arthropods, plant pathogens and weeds. The candidate will be expected to participate in graduate student education through a formal relationship with the LSU Department of Entomology. The successful candidate will be expected to obtain extramural funding to support the activities of the position from federal and state agencies, commodity boards, and agro-industries. Collaboration with research and extension faculty within Louisiana, as well as with national experts on issues of shared interest and importance will be encouraged. Formal participation in multi-disciplinary, regional, or national research initiatives will be expected. The incumbent is expected to perform other tasks that may be assigned by supervisor(s) and work cooperatively with other Research / Extension faculty at the parish, regional, and state levels.

QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS: PhD in the area of entomology, applied biology/ecology, plant sciences, pest management, or closely related field. The individual should currently hold the rank of full professor or demonstrate a record of achievement warranting appointment to the rank of professor in the LSU A&M system.

ADDITIONAL QUALIFICATIONS: The distinguished faculty member, who would hold the Jack Hamilton Endowed Chair in Cotton Production, should have the following qualifications: 1) a national and international reputation in his/her academic discipline, as demonstrated by publications in peer-reviewed journals and in media directed at stakeholder audiences, and grants from state and federal agencies, commodity groups and industry; 2) a record of leadership in professional organizations in his/her academic discipline and in professional organizations associated with the cotton industry; 3) evidence of collaboration with cotton producers and colleagues in other academic disciplines who conduct research and outreach activities in cotton; 4) a record of excellence in graduate education and mentoring of graduate students; 5) a record of professional recognition from university and professional organizations; and 6) a record of active participation of multi-state, multi-agency, and multi-disciplinary programs focused on a holistic systems approach to problem solving.

SALARY AND BENEFITS: Salary will be commensurate with qualifications and experience. The LSU AgCenter has an attractive benefits package with a wide variety of benefit options. Benefits offered include retirement, multiple medical insurance options, supplemental insurances (dental, life, long-term disability, accident, vision, long-term care, etc.), Tax Saver Flexible Benefits Plan (saves tax dollars on some child care and medical expenses), university holidays (14 per year, typically includes a week off at Christmas), generous annual (vacation) and sick leave benefits, Employee Assistance Program, and possible educational leave and tuition exemption for coursework at campuses of the LSU System. Specific benefits depend on job category, percent effort and length of employment.

APPLICATION DEADLINE: January 15, 2018 or until a suitable candidate is identified.
