WORK LOCATION: Position will be hired through LSU AgCenter H. Rouse Caffey Rice Research Station, Crowley, Louisiana. Position will be based as a visiting scientist at Cornell University, Ithaca NY, in the lab of Dr. Susan McCouch.

POSITION DESCRIPTION: Responsibilities of the position include developing comprehensive genomic prediction methodologies in the context of an established, large-scale rice variety development program. This position will work to develop, validate, and optimize prediction methodologies and procedures for immediate application in the LSU AgCenter rice breeding program of Dr. Adam Famoso. Specific questions may include optimization of marker number and composition of SNP sets, training population size and composition, development of selection indices, selection of optimal statistical models that incorporate weather/climate data; estimation of cost-benefit trade-offs associated with the introduction of GS into an existing breeding program. The successful candidate must have excellent oral and written communication skills and is expected to publish research results in peer-reviewed journals. The LSU AgCenter rice breeding program has a comprehensive field testing component, winter nursery facilities, and a high-throughput SNP marker lab that is used extensively for MAS.

QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS: Ph.D. in plant breeding, genetics or related field; strong background in statistical/ quantitative genetics; an understanding of the theoretical and computational methodologies used to analyze quantitative and molecular data for genomic prediction; strong interest in the application of GS to applied variety development program; ability to work well across teams. Expertise in statistical programming languages (R, SAS, MATLAB, etc.) and ability to code in at least one scripting language (Python, Perl, etc.). The position will be based in Ithaca, NY and will require 2-3 trips per year to Louisiana.

SALARY AND BENEFITS: Salary will be commensurate with qualifications and experience. The LSU AgCenter has an attractive benefits package with a wide variety of benefit options. Benefits offered include retirement, multiple medical insurance options, supplemental insurances (dental, life, long-term disability, accident, vision, long-term care, etc.), Tax Saver Flexible Benefits Plan (saves tax dollars on some child care and medical expenses), university holidays (14 per year, typically includes a week off at Christmas), generous annual (vacation) and sick leave benefits, Employee Assistance Program, and possible educational leave and tuition exemption for coursework at campuses of the LSU System. Specific benefits depend on job category, percent effort and length of employment.

APPLICATION DEADLINE: August 27, 2018 or until suitable candidate is located.
