The current full-time base salary range for this position is $76,700 - $115,400 annually. "Off-scale" salaries, which yield compensation that is higher than the published system-wide salary at the designated rank and step, are offered when necessary to meet competitive conditions.

Position duration: Initial appointment is for one year with the possibility of renewal based on performance and funding availability.

Position description

University of California, Berkeley is seeking to hire an Assistant/Associate Project Scientist to support its growing area of research on clean power system transition in China under the direction of Dr. Jiang Lin of the Department of Agricultural and Resources Economics. We have worked closely with the Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory's Energy Market and Policy Department and collaborators in the U.S. and China, including City University of New York, Tsinghua, Renmin, and North China Electric Power University, on power sector modeling and analysis to develop pathways for clean power system transition, assess the impacts of electricity market reform, and evaluate the economic and financial impacts of clean power transition in China.

Duties of the position:
Under the direction of the supervisor, this position will conduct research and use quantitative methodologies to develop clean transition pathways for China's power system, and to evaluate their potential economic, health, and social impacts. This position will help conduct literature review and data collection to support the development of modeling parameters and inputs for power system modeling in China, prepare scientific reports, participate in preparing peer-reviewed publications, and conduct related technology and policy research, as well as outreach activities to communicate research findings. It is expected that the successful candidate will travel up to 15% of the time to conduct field research and present research findings.

• The candidate must be eligible to work in the United States. (The department is unable to sponsor a visa/work permit.)

Preferred qualifications

• Experience with power system modeling using open source models such as Gridpath and familiarity with open source dataset on power plants, resource assessment, and technology costs
• Experience conducting research on electricity market operation including market designs and evaluation
• Ability to read Chinese sources
• Experience working with energy and emissions, air pollutants, and conducting health impact analysis with familiarity of exposure-response functions preferred
• Experience working with public entities and policymaking bodies
• Ability to work independently according to technical guidelines, and collaboratively as part of a team
• Excellent written and oral communication skills
• Ph.D degree in Environmental Sciences, Energy and Resources, or relevant qualification with demonstrated research experience in the area of power system modeling and analysis
