Research Associate
(Nematode Advisory Service)

(This is a grant-funded, non-tenure track position. Funding must be available for any continuation of appointment.)

WORK LOCATION: Department of Plant Pathology and Crop Physiology, LSU Ag Center, Baton Rouge, Louisiana.

POSITION DESCRIPTION: The responsibilities of this person will be to assist in the operation of the Nematode Advisory Service and perform extraction and enumeration of nematodes from soil and root samples submitted by crop producers, consultants, agents and Department of Ag & Forestry quarantine samples. Additional responsibilities will include the development and use of molecular techniques to identify species of Meloidogyne and especially M. enterolobii for survey and quarantine purposes in Louisiana soils. Survey work will require traveling throughout Louisiana to visit sweetpotato, cotton, and soybean fields. Additional skills required for survey work include using handheld GPS receivers and ability to download sampling sites into a geospatial program such as ArcMap for development of maps. The person will also be required to implement and conduct greenhouse trials and corresponding assessments of pathogenicity and fecundity of nematode species such as M. enterolobii. The person will also be expected to statistically analyze data from experiments and compile reports of the various experiments and survey results. This position will be a full-time person working 40 hours per week.

QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS: M.S. or Ph.D. degree in Plant Pathology/Plant Nematology and experience and interest in nematode population assesment, nematode identification, and applied nematology. The candidate must also have experience in statistical design and analysis and establishing greenhouse, on-farm, or research station trials. Experience is required in molecular characterization to the species level particularly in the genus Meloidogyne.
