The Department of Plant and Soil Science, Texas Tech University, Lubbock, seeks applications for a tenure-track assistant professor in vegetable production systems. We are specifically looking for a broadly trained but innovative horticulturalist/agronomist. Interest to develop a program focused on a combination of two or more vegetable crops of importance is highly desired. This will be a 9-month, academic appointment with responsibilities for teaching, research, and service. The successful candidate is expected to establish a grant-supported research program focused on developing sustainable and/or organic vegetable production systems, with an emphasis on urban or small-acreage systems. The successful candidate will contribute to teaching, mentoring, and student advising at both the undergraduate and graduate levels in horticulture, one of the major signature programs of the department, by teaching undergraduate and graduate courses in horticulture, vegetable production, as well as advanced courses in his/her area of specialization. The typical teaching load in the Department of Plant and Soil Science varies from two to four courses per academic year (one or two per semester) depending on the extent of the research program. The successful candidate is expected to collaborate with colleagues in our Urban Food and Wine Production program located in Lubbock and Fredericksburg, Texas. He/she is also expected to work with government and industry clientele, other higher education institutions, and to provide service to the Department, College, University, and community. The position provides opportunity for professional growth, while collaborating with an energetic and productive team of scientists and educators.

Candidates must have an earned Ph.D. in a field related to horticulture or have successfully passed their qualifying examination and be admitted to candidacy for the doctoral degree. In the later case, final hiring decision will be made only after the candidate successfully defend his/her dissertation. Demonstrated ability for interdisciplinary collaboration, publishing high-quality scientific research, and grantsmanship consistent with tenure-track assistant professor rank are expected. Post-doctoral training and independent research experience is highly desirable. Excellent interpersonal, oral and written communication skills are essential.
