A postdoctoral research associate position is available at the Cornell Lake Erie Research and Extension Laboratory in Portland, New York. The primary responsibility of this position will be to conduct studies that will be useful for generating information on temporal and spatial vineyard crop load management for improved fruit quality. An interdisciplinary team of juice, wine, and table grape industry leaders, university and industry engineers, and university viticulturists has been formed to develop and evaluate new sensor technology for improved vineyard management and production efficiency. Objectives include integrating viticulture, engineering, and educational solutions which measure and respond to canopy and crop variability, collect and manage vineyard information, reduce labor costs through automation of repetitive tasks, and foster adoption of new technologies and management practices through socio-economic analysis and industry education.

The responsibility of the candidate is (1) to conduct vineyard research to quantify vineyard crop load with respect to canopy size, canopy performance, and crop size; (2) to work with project engineers on implementing the use of sensor and GPS technology in vineyards; and (3) to evaluate the effect of crop load management on fruit quality parameters. The candidate will cooperate with other members of the research team in supporting overall program objectives. The candidate will engage in producing peer-reviewed publications and presentations at scientific meetings.

QUALIFICATIONS: Applicants with a Ph.D. degree in Viticulture, Horticulture, or a related field will be considered. Candidates should have skill and an understanding of production viticulture, grapevine biology, and field research. Candidates with a proven work ethic, publication record, leadership, and team building skills will be given preference.

ANNUAL SALARY: Salary is commensurate with qualifications and experience. An excellent benefits package is included. The term of the position is 1 year with potential for renewal.

Candidates must submit CV, names and contact information for three references with a statement of interest to:
