Position Summary
The University of Arizona (UA), Arizona’s flagship and land-grant university, seeks an energetic Director of the School of Animal and Comparative Biomedical Sciences (ACBS).

Review of applications will begin August 13th, and will continue until a suitable candidate is identified.

The ACBS Director will work closely with nine other academic unit heads, four associate deans, the Office of International Initiatives, Development, Alumni, Advocacy and Corporate Relations and the Vice President and Dean.

ACBS has more than 110 employees doing research, instruction and service in diverse program areas including Animal Science and Production, Animal Health, Aquaculture, Bioinformatics, Biomedicine, Food Safety, Microbiology, Veterinary Science, and the Race Track Industry. ACBS has strong Cooperative Extension programs serving Arizona’s animal industries. ACBS has five undergraduate majors: Animal Science, Veterinary Science, Microbiology, Food Safety, and Animal and Biomedical Industries. Current enrollment includes over 800 undergraduate and 34 graduate students.

Duties & Responsibilities
The Director reports directly to the Vice President of Agriculture, Life & Veterinary Sciences, and Cooperative Extension and College of Agriculture and Life Sciences Dean and is responsible and accountable for the vision, leadership, and administration of ACBS education, research and Cooperative Extension.

The School Director must: be a proven entrepreneurial and innovative leader with demonstrated excellence and outstanding achievements in at least two of the three land-grant missions, warranting appointment as Full Professor; be able to work with commercial partners in funded projects; relate well with donors and community organizations; and be excellent in financial and budget administration, leadership and management.

Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities Minimum Qualifications

  • A Ph.D. in a relevant scientific discipline.
  • Proven academic leadership and management skills.
  • Evidence of research productivity and a successful record of grant procurement.
  • A demonstrated interest in and strong commitments to undergraduate and graduate instruction programs.
  • A good understanding of Cooperative Extension and be capable of and willing to relate these activities to all external stakeholders and user groups.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Exemplary communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Collaborative leadership with impeccable integrity.
  • Effective interaction with advisory board members and other external stakeholder groups; success in philanthropic support.
  • Ability to succeed in the face of financial challenges and opportunities inherent to a large and complex school.
  • Experience in philanthropy
