Assistant or Associate Professor – Weed Science

The Department of Agronomy at Iowa State University, located in Ames, Iowa, seeks a faculty member to establish an outstanding extension and research program in weed science. This is a 12-month, tenure-track appointment at the assistant or associate professor rank involving 60% Extension and 40% research. Extension responsibilities will include leading state-wide programs focused on current and emerging weed problems in agronomic crop production systems. Research responsibilities will focus on improving the understanding of crop-weed interactions, herbicide resistance evolution, and other factors influencing weed population dynamics. The development of effective, integrated weed management systems that protect environmental quality will be a priority. The successful candidate is expected to: develop an effective and impactful extension program using innovative communication tools, including written, oral, and electronic media; establish an extramurally-funded research program that generates peer-reviewed publications; mentor graduate students in Extension and research projects; and work collaboratively across the interface of disciplines that might include weed physiology, population genetics, other pest management sciences, and ecology. This position offers significant opportunities to be involved in or develop strong interdisciplinary extension and research teams with faculty in the Departments of Agronomy, Agricultural and Biosystems Engineering, Plant Pathology and Microbiology, and other related departments on campus; allied research organizations such as the USDA-ARS National Laboratory for Agriculture and the Environment; private industry; commodity organizations; and other state and national partners.

Required Education and Experience

  • Ph.D. by start date in weed science, agronomy, or a closely related field.
  • Candidates for the rank of associate professor will have, in addition to the above, an outstanding research record as demonstrated by peer-reviewed publications, a solid record of grant funding, and documented teaching and/or extension education experience commensurate with University standards for such an appointment.

Preferred Education and Experience

  • Strong written and oral communication skills, as demonstrated by publications and presentations to agricultural clientele and the scientific community.
  • Experience in extension and outreach activities.
  • Demonstrated ability to engage with diverse stakeholders, including faculty, staff, students, and extension clientele.
  • Experience in modeling biological systems and processes.
  • Demonstrated ability to conduct collaborative and interdisciplinary research.
  • Evidence of successful grant applications to support research and/or extension activities.
