The successful candidate will assist in preparing and implementing field research projects at the KSU Southwest Research-Extension Center. Other related duties include, but are not limited to, collecting soil and plant samples, making observations on crop growth and development, supervising temporary/student help, maintaining written and computer records and cooperating with other personnel in a team effort to maintain station facilities and equipment, conduct field days, and assist visiting scientists and graduate students.

Required Minimum Qualifications:
High school diploma.

One year experience in Ag or Animal Sciences. Education in the Biological Sciences, Ag Sciences, or Animal Sciences may be substituted for experience.

Preferred Qualifications:
CDL. Ability to operate vehicles with standard transmission. Ability to learn quickly how to operate various forms of farm equipment.

Ability to communicate effectively in English, both verbally and in writing, in order to interpret precise instructions, procedures, technical plans and designs, and keep research and production records. Ability to drive large and small farm equipment safely and skillfully. Ability to recognize plant diseases and signs of insect infestation. Knowledge of the hazards and effects of pesticides (herbicides, insecticides, fungicides, etc.) and the ability to read and interpret label and MSDS instructions regarding safe and proper use of agricultural chemicals. Knowledge of hazards and safety precautions pertaining to repair, maintenance, and operation of agricultural equipment, vehicles, and power tools. Ability to setup, calibrate, and operate precision agricultural equipment. Ability to use desktop and laptop computers including the use of Microsoft Office (Word and Excel).

Certified, or capable and willing to be certified, to apply restricted-use pesticides to crops.

The nature of this job requires good motor skills and physical health. Work requires considerable physical exertion to transport items weighing 50 lbs or more unassisted on a regular basis. The position involves regular use or contact with farm equipment/ machinery and motorized vehicles such as gasoline or diesel tractors (10 to 100 hp), plot-sized combines (20 to 60 hp); pickup trucks; automobiles; plot tillage and planting equipment; chemical application on equipment; stationary threshers; moisture and test-weight meters; seed conditioners and counters, balances; growth chambers and incubators; etc.
