Position Summary:
The Department of Animal, Dairy and Veterinary Sciences (ADVS) at Utah State University (USU) is seeking applicants for a 9-month, full-time, academic year, tenure-track faculty position in Ruminant Nutritional Physiology. This position is available January 2018 or August 2018, dependent upon availability of candidate.

The successful candidate will contribute to the Research (65%), Teaching (30%), and Service (5%) missions of the College of Agriculture and Applied Sciences (CAAS) at USU. The research objective is to develop an innovative, extramurally funded, nationally- and internationally-recognized research program directed toward fundamental studies of nutrient metabolism in ruminants (beef, dairy and sheep/goats) that have potential to improve the efficiency and sustainability of animal production systems in the Intermountain West. The candidate will have the capability to study nutritional physiology at a fundamental level and how it integrates with cellular and molecular events relative to function at the whole-animal level. Opportunities for independent and collaborative research include, but are not limited to, metabolic adaptations to increase productivity; macro- and/or micronutrient metabolism; regulation of intake; interactions of diet and immune function; interactions of host with the gastrointestinal microbial community; nutritional effects on gene and/or protein expression; and/or any other relevant and fundable topics. It is expected that the successful candidate will collaborate with other faculty members in areas such as reproductive physiology, growth biology, animal health and genetics/epigenetics. The candidate’s research program will be strengthened by, and will contribute to, a strong research base in animal nutrition and related basic sciences within CAAS and throughout USU. A candidate with a basic knowledge of the conditions that affect production agriculture in the western US is preferred.

Excellence in teaching is highly valued at USU; the successful candidate will be expected to serve as instructor or co-instructor in our departmental undergraduate and graduate animal nutrition courses as well as the basic nutrition course in the School of Veterinary Medicine in the Washington-Idaho-Montana-Utah Regional Program in Veterinary Medicine. The candidate will be expected to recruit and mentor graduate students in ruminant nutrition and will be encouraged to provide students with opportunities in USU’s highly successful undergraduate research program as well.
