NSF Ph.D. Graduate Assistantships in plant breeding/mechanics/cell wall biology

Two Ph.D. graduate assistantships in plant breeding, mechanics and cell wall biology are available immediately in the Department of Horticulture at the University of Kentucky. The Ph.D. candidate will be sponsored by a NSF grant that provides a stipend for living expenses ($25,000 per year) and covers tuition costs.

Project Description:
This project will focus on the development of plants resistant to stem lodging. The Ph.D. candidate will develop skills in genetics, phenotyping, biomechanics and team work. This exciting project is part of a collaboration between the University of Kentucky, the University of Idaho and Clemson University, with a multidisciplinary focus on food security.
The Ph.D. candidate will establish credentials for employment in the sectors of academia and agricultural industry. The Ph.D. candidate will have opportunities to present his/her research findings at meetings and receive career development training.

Skills in analytical thinking, independence and a Bachelor’s degree in plant biology, plant science, agronomy, horticulture and/or related fields.
Oral and written communication skills commensurate with the project.
