Assistant Professor in Microbial Food Safety

The Department of Food Science & Technology in the College of Agricultural and Environmental Sciences is recruiting an Assistant Professor specializing in foodborne pathogens with a PhD in Microbiology, Food Science, Biochemistry, Genetics, Molecular Biology, or a related field. The appointee will be expected to develop a research program on basic and applied aspects of food microbiology with specific focus towards microbial food safety with applications relevant to California agriculture and the food industry in general. Areas of research interest may include, but are not limited to pathogen biology, epidemiology, and risk assessment that result in detection, control and/or prevention of foodborne pathogens within food production systems. This is an academic year (9-month) tenure track assistant professor position. The position will include an appointment in the Agricultural Experiment Station carrying the expectation that the appointee conduct mission-oriented research and outreach of relevance to California stakeholders.
The appointee will be responsible for teaching undergraduate and graduate coursework in food microbiology, with a typical teaching load of two courses per year. Teaching will encompass both undergraduate and graduate courses and can include the topics food processing plant sanitation and introductory food preservation. Additional contributions to departmental courses and graduate education in Food Science & Technology is expected with additional opportunities for the graduate groups in Microbiology, Viticulture & Enology, Animal Biology, Plant Science, Integrated Genetics and Genomics, or Biochemistry and Molecular Biology. Mentoring of graduate students in graduate groups, undergraduate student advising, participation in and development of outreach programs, curricular development, and performance of departmental and university service are expected.
The research, teaching and outreach mission of the Department of Food Science & Technology (http://foodscience.ucdavis.edu) focuses on the creation, development and distribution of basic and applied knowledge related to the production of foods, with a scope extending from the fundamental molecular level to the process scale. The department is associated with the Robert Mondavi Institute of Wine and Food Science at UC Davis and is internationally recognized as a center of excellence for food research.
The appointee will have access to wide-ranging infrastructure resources and many collaborative opportunities within the Department, other Departments within the College of Agricultural & Environmental Sciences, and with colleagues in the College of Biological Sciences and the College of Engineering, among others. This includes the Food Safety and Measurement Facility and the UC Davis Genome Center.

Qualifications: Ph.D. or equivalent degree in Microbiology, Food Science, Biochemistry, Genetics, Molecular Biology, or a closely-related field. Postdoctoral experience and evidence of research excellence is expected. Evidence of leadership and organizational skills relevant to the development of a successful research, teaching and outreach program in a microbiology field is required. The candidate should have demonstrated ability or potential to obtain extramural support for research activities as well as the capacity to develop and instruct undergraduate and graduate courses and the ability to develop and conduct extramurally funded research in food microbiology.
Salary: Within the Assistant Professor rank at the University of California, and commensurate with experience.
