Overview:

The Biology Department at the University of St. Thomas (Saint Paul, MN) invites qualified applicants to apply for a Postdoctoral Research Associate position in urban agriculture. This 100% research position is funded by a National Science Foundation grant for a period of two years, and is a unique opportunity to help develop a new research field. The project focuses on quantifying rates of nutrient recycling and loss from compost application in urban gardens, and includes outreach aimed at reducing urban food insecurity. Duties will include conducting field research and laboratory analyses, supervising teams of undergraduate researchers, analyzing and interpreting data, presenting findings at scientific meetings, and publishing results in refereed journals. This is a contract position that is anticipated to last two years depending on business needs. Potential start dates of late 2017 or early 2018. The anticipated salary for this position is $46,000, depending on qualifications. This is a full-time, benefits eligible position. Qualifications:

Minimum qualifications: Candidates must have a Ph.D. in place by the date of hire. Preferred qualifications: The successful candidate will have a background in agroecology, urban ecology, soil science, hydrology, biogeochemistry, or a related field. We are particularly looking for someone who is creative and thinks systematically, and who is eager to explore how urban agriculture can contribute to sustainability of urban ecosystems. Excellent oral and written communication skills with documented ability to serve as a lead author in publishing manuscripts is required. Experience mentoring undergraduate researchers is desired.
