    Head/Manager of the Audubon Sugar Institute with Extension Sugar Processing Education Responsibilities

    Applications and nominations are invited for a qualified individual to provide administrative oversight and operations management for the Audubon Sugar Institute (ASI) in the Louisiana State University Agricultural Center. The successful candidate will also have extension responsibilities related to sugar processing.

    WORK LOCATION: Audubon Sugar Institute, St. Gabriel, Louisiana

    GENERAL INFORMATION: The Audubon Sugar Institute (ASI) has the mission to foster a center of excellence for applied and original sugar and bioprocessing research that exceeds the expectations of Louisiana stakeholders and the international sugar industry, through innovative research, technology transfer, and education. Research projects at ASI have focused on optimization of sugar processing to enable sugar factories to become more efficient and to develop a diversified sugarcane processing industry through development of a biorefinery. During the past several years, selected faculty focused efforts on bio-fuels and bio-products supported by USDA-NIFA AFRI. Future opportunities exist for research on value-added bio-products from syrup and bagasse. ASI maintains strong relationships with Louisiana processors through scheduled visits by faculty members to sugar factories during the harvesting and off-crop seasons. The local sugar processing industry provides strong fiscal support and emphasizes the need for effective extension and technology transfers programs. The faculty and staff at ASI consists of 5 faculty members, 7 research associates,1 post-doctorates and 5 additional staff members. The 27,000 sq. ft. research facility at St. Gabriel, Louisiana is comprised of six laboratories, each specializing in specific areas of focus. In addition the facility includes a pilot plant; machine shop and welding area. ASI also continues its outreach and training program with short courses that are designed to increase knowledge at all levels in the sugar and supporting industries.     DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: The successful candidate will have administrative responsibility for developing excellence in research, extension, and education at a land-grant university with management of the human, physical, and fiscal resources at ASI. Specific duties will include: (1) leadership and oversight of novel and applied research and extension programs in sugar processing and value-added products from sugarcane (2) budget preparation and management (3) recruitment and professional development of faculty, staff, and students, (4) conduct independent and coordinated extension programming to fulfill mission of ASI, (5) and represent ASI research and programs to the university administration, to public and private agencies, and to stakeholder groups at the local, regional, national, and international levels. Candidates with a Ph.D. and background and experience oriented toward research, extension, and education will play a greater role in developing a vision for the ASI, providing long-term programmatic leadership, and mentoring faculty. Such candidates may hold a tenured or tenure-track academic rank, be assigned duties at the professorial level, and hold a comparable administrative title. Candidates with an M.S. will be oriented more toward management of ASI operations, will hold the academic rank of Instructor, and will be involved with extension duties consistent with that rank.

    QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS: Applicants must have an M.S. (Ph.D. preferred) in chemical engineering, mechanical engineering, industrial engineering, chemistry or closely related field. The candidate should have a demonstrated record of excellence in their field. Experience in education, extension, and agriculture is strongly desired. Administrative experience and evidence of strong leadership as well as personnel and financial management skills in a multi-disciplinary unit are expected. A working knowledge of the U.S. and Louisiana sugar industry is important. Willingness to collaborate with private and public stakeholders supporting ASI are critical to the success of this position.

    SALARY AND BENEFITS: Salary will be commensurate with qualifications and experience. LSU has an attractive benefits package with a wide variety of benefit options.
