    ASSISTANT/ASSOCIATE/EXTENSION AGENT (HORTICULTURE)

    WORK LOCATION: Caddo Parish, housed at Randall T. Moore Center, Shreveport, LA, and will serve the 12 parishes of the Northwest Region.

    NATURE OF WORK: The successful candidate for this position will be required to prepare a written strategic plan for the development and execution of an educational program for the Northwest Region emphasizing urban consumer horticulture interests and needs and strengthening the Louisiana Master Gardener Program. The programming will also address the interests and needs of the commercial horticulture industry. This will include turf grass, ornamentals, and vegetables along with alternative (non-traditional) horticulture enterprises. The candidate will also develop and coordinate the evaluation of ‘Louisiana Super Plants’ at the Red River Research Station. The selected candidate will serve as a horticultural resource to the ANR agents in the Northwest Region. The individual will be responsible for establishing an advisory committee to assist in the development and implementation of programming objectives; and promote the development of local leadership and volunteers through training and involvement. Among the responsibilities will include planning and scheduling various functions, such as seminars, plant disease and insect pest clinics, and other educational activities to be held at strategic locations within the region, including Randall T. Moore Center, local nurseries, shopping centers, and the distance learning facility at the regional office. The individual will also be responsible for building and maintaining relationships with local and regional horticulture organizations, such as Shreveport Green and the American Rose Center, and governing bodies, as well as maintaining a cooperative working relationship with Northwest Region and state extension and research personnel, and the state Horticulture Council, to provide maximum program impact. As an Extension employee the agent must continue professional development and remain current with research and its application to programming. The individual will be responsible for other tasks as may be assigned by the Northwest Regional Director or Plant Science Program Leader.

    QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS: Baccalaureate degree in horticulture or closely related field of plant science is required. A Master's degree in horticulture or closely related area is desired. Candidate must be proficient in planning and executing educational programs in consumer and commercial horticulture and should have practical knowledge of horticultural best management and environmental practices. Candidate must be an effective communicator, utilize mass media in outreach programs and possess the ability to work cooperatively with individuals and groups.

    SALARY AND BENEFITS: Salary will be commensurate with qualifications and experience. The LSU AgCenter has an attractive benefits package with a wide variety of benefit options.     CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT: A personal automobile and appropriate insurance coverage is required (travel allowance provided). Satisfactory completion of two specific graduate level extension courses (6 credit hours) is generally required in the first two years of employment. Additionally, a faculty member who does not have a related master’s degree must complete an additional 9 hours of related graduate level coursework in order to be promoted to associate agent and such promotion must occur in the first seven years of employment. An exception is that additional agent experience may be substituted for nine hours of coursework, but not for the two required courses.
