    Job Summary


    The School of Agriculture and Applied Sciences is seeking to hire a postdoctoral research associate who has recently been awarded a Ph.D. The incumbent will conduct team and independent research to evaluate native bees as pollinators of small fruits on small farms in Mississippi.

    The postdoctoral research associate will work under the direction of scientists from Alcorn State University Demonstration Farm (Demo Farm) in Mound Bayou, MS and the USDA Agricultural Research Service (USDA ARS) in Stoneville, MS. The duration of this appointment is for 12 months that can be extended for 6 more months depending on the performance and availability of funds. The point of work for this position is the Demo Farm; however, some laboratory work will be conducted at the USDA ARS cooperator’s laboratory.

     

    Knowledge Skills and Abilities



    • Willingness to work with bees, ants and insect pests of vegetables.

    • Familiar with integrated pest management concept and practices.

    • Skills in experimental design and data collection for both laboratory and field experiments.

    • Familiar with Microsoft Office software


    Essential Job Functions



    • Determine relative density of native bee populations in agricultural landscapes during spring and summer seasons.

    • Estimate the contribution of natural-occurring and mass-released native bees on fruit set, growth, and size of strawberries and blueberries under high tunnel cultivation.

    • Develop novel methodology to detect possible pesticide contamination of bees (both larval and adult stages) and their nesting substrates.

    • Discuss research results with scientists, students, farmers, and the general public, as requested.

    • Compile research data on to spreadsheets and initiate statistical analysis.

    • Other duties as assigned.


    Qualifications



    • Ph.D. in Entomology or related discipline.

    • Graduate/post graduate research work experience with insects.

    • Possess basic knowledge of insect taxonomy and working experience with hymenoptera especially with bees.
