Job To Refer: AgCenter Assistant/Associate/Professor (Field Crops Plant Pathologist)
    Macon Ridge Research Station
    LSU AgCenter

    POSITION VACANCY ANNOUNCEMENT
    Assistant/Associate/Professor
    (Field Crops Plant Pathologist)

POSITION DESCRIPTION: Full-time 12 month, tenure-track position with a 60% research and 40% extension appointment. The selected applicant will be responsible for developing a research/extension program with the goal of improving disease and nematode management strategies in Louisiana field crops (cotton, corn, grain sorghum, soybean, and small grains). Research priorities will focus on emerging disease/nematode issues and adding to existing information supporting plant protection. The applicant must interact with commodity and agricultural industry partners to identify, develop, and implement critical research projects. The extension component will involve responsibilities for technology transfer across the Northeast Region addressing disease management in field crops produced in the region. Collaboration with research/extension faculty within and outside Louisiana, as well as with national experts on mutual issues of pathological importance is expected. Formal participation in multi-disciplinary, regional, or national research initiatives is also expected. It is expected that results from research projects will be published in peer-reviewed journals and other scientific/technical publications. Extramural funding to support the activities of the position must be secured from federal and state agencies, commodity (state and national) research boards, and agro-industries. The candidate will participate in graduate student education through a formal relationship with the LSU Department of Plant Pathology and Crop Physiology (20%). Additional duties include participation in professional and technical meetings and contributing to annual field crop disease/nematode management publications. Technology transfer and outreach to stakeholders must be accomplished with web content, social media, agricultural trade magazines, and traditional Extension methods (news releases, newsletters, oral delivery). In addition to laboratory facilities, equipment, and supplies, there currently are two grant funded research associates to support project efforts.

WORK LOCATION: The Northeast Region of Louisiana includes 12 parishes (counties) and three field crop research stations. Research projects should be diverse and include discovery and development of disease management strategies in controlled field environments on the research stations, as well as, validation and implementation projects in farm-scale studies. The position will be based at the Macon Ridge Research Station (Winnsboro). Facilities include over 1000 acres of row crop research focusing on agronomic production and integrated pest management of arthropods, plant pathogens, and weeds. Research projects will also be implemented at the Northeast Research Station in St. Joseph, approximately 40 miles east of Winnsboro. Opportunities exist to expand research projects to other regions of Louisiana and the main campus.

QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS: PhD in plant pathology, applied biology/ecology, or other closely related agricultural field of study is required. Documented training or experience in field crops research and agronomic production practices are critical to the success of the position. Applicants should have demonstrated effective oral, written, and electronic communication skills necessary for presentations to a variety of audiences. Evidence of successful grantsmanship and stakeholder interaction will be important considerations. The ability to multi-task and work in a team environment with research and extension faculty representing other disciplines is critical. A working knowledge of U.S field crop disease identification and management is necessary. Experience with disease forecasting, fungicide screening trials, fungicide-resistant pathogen population monitoring, and variety evaluation is desirable.

SALARY AND BENEFITS: Salary will be commensurate with qualifications and experience. The LSU AgCenter has an attractive benefits package with a wide variety of benefit options. Benefits offered include retirement, multiple medical insurance options, supplemental insurances (dental, life, long-term disability, accident, vision, long-term care, etc.), Tax Saver Flexible Benefits Plan (saves tax dollars on some child care and medical expenses), university holidays (14 per year, typically includes a week off at Christmas), generous annual (vacation) and sick leave benefits, and Employee Assistance Program. Specific benefits depend on job category, percent effort and length of employment.

APPLICATION DEADLINE: June 15, 2012 or until a suitable candidate is identified.

APPLICATION PROCEDURE: Apply online at https://lsusystemcareers.lsu.edu/ and attach cover letter including a statement of professional interest and goals, resume, and four letters of reference. Paper, faxed or e-mailed application materials will not be accepted, except that in lieu of attaching the reference letters online, they may be sent directly to the contact below.
