The Soil Science Group at Technische Universität, München (TUM), located at Freising-Weihenstephan (about 40 km from Munich's city center), is establishing a Cameca NanoSIMS 50L, for the analysis of soil materials.
Soil is a dynamic and hierarchically organized system of various organic and inorganic constituents, the spatial structure of which defines a large, complex and heterogeneous biogeochemical interface. NanoSIMS will be the focused technique to unravel the heterogeneous composition and three-dimensional architecture of submicron sized organo-mineral associations in soils (organic matter on iron oxides and clay minerals).
This will be achieved by analysis of submicron sized soil particles and fractions, locating the association of elements/isotopes (C, N, Fe, Al and Si) in soil structural components, as well as in combination with well-established labeling techniques/stable isotopes (13C and 15N).
Two positions are available for the establishment and maintenance of the instrument, as well as developing and evaluating techniques for soil science applications, including the training of Ph.D. Students.
• Research Scientist (Postdoctoral) -- according to German Civil Service Level TV-L 13
• Engineer (NanoSIMS Operator) -- according to German Civil Service Level TV-L 11
Both positions are full-time and permanent, after evaluation of performance.
The Research Scientist position also includes teaching duties.
Candidates will be recruited, first for a three-year period, under an employment contract with Technische Universität, München.
Candidates should have backgrounds in SIMS or other scanning analytical techniques and mass spectrometry and, at the same time, a strong interest in the environmental applications of the NanoSIMS technology.
The evaluation of candidates will start October 15th and continue until the positions are filled.
