Assistant/Associate/Professor (Animal Science) (Anticipated)
WORK LOCATION: Hill Farm Research Station (Homer, LA) and Red River Research Station (Bossier City, LA). Domicile will be Homer and successful candidate will conduct Animal Science research at both locations.
The Hill Farm Research Station is located in north central Louisiana and is the most northern Station in the state. The Station is situated in the hills of the Upper Coastal Plain, on predominately sandy soils. The Station contains 1,400 acres of land, with approximately 50% of the land area devoted to beef cattle, pasture and hay production. Approximately 350 mature cows, along with calves, will be available for use in research. Poultry, forage and forestry research utilizes the remainder of the acreage. The Red River Research Station is located in west Louisiana, along the Red River, on alluvial soils. The Station has about 165 acres, devoted to beef cattle, with about 100 head of mature cows. An additional 400 acres is devoted to row crop and related research. Both Stations are staffed and equipped for Animal Science research and a Forage Agronomist has research responsibilities at both Stations, as well.
POSITION DESCRIPTION: This is a Tenure-track Position. The successful candidate will be responsible for developing a productive, relevant and mission-oriented research program, with the aim to improve the profitability of beef producers in Louisiana. Research will focus primarily on, but will not be limited, to Ruminant Nutrition, as it relates to cow/calf management, stocker management and/or replacement heifer development. He/she will be required to collaborate with Researchers and Extension Specialists within the LSU AgCenter, to identify critical research needs, as well as partner with industry and other universities, in cooperative studies.
The successful candidate will be required to document and publish results from the research in refereed journals and other scientific outlets, appropriate to the discipline. Submission of grants for extramural support of the Research Program will also be expected.
He/she will be expected to maintain qualification for membership on the Graduate Faculty and establish an adjunct professional relationship with the School of Animal Sciences, for the purpose of working with Graduate Student Programs.
The position is assigned a full-time Research Associate at the Hill Farm and Support Staff at both Stations, to support the research effort, in addition to ample equipment and supplies at both locations.
The successful candidate will be expected to manage personnel, equipment and supplies. Responsibilities will also include participation in professional and technical meetings and other outreach, as is necessary, to inform producers, industry personnel and other Research Scientists of project activities and findings.
The successful candidate will work through the respective Regional Directors for overall coordination of the research at the two Stations and will coordinate day-to-day operations with a Research Farm Supervisor.
QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS: Ph.D. in Ruminant Nutrition or closely related Animal Science field of study is required. Experience and training in Beef Cattle Research and Herd Management, with a Forage Emphasis, are highly desirable. Applicants should demonstrate effective oral and written communication skills necessary for professional presentations and be able to interact well with beef producers and other stakeholders.
