Position description
The Dr. Ruhi Lab, in the Department Environmental Science, Policy and Management (ESPM) within the Rausser College of Natural Resources (RCNR) at the University of California, Berkeley (UCB) seeks applicants for the position of Junior Specialist, to specialize in the area of Aquatic Ecology.

The Junior Specialist's primary focus will be to perform field and laboratory studies, under the supervision of Dr. Ruhi, aimed to advance the understanding of the ecological effects of environmental variation in aquatic ecosystems. The appointee will work alongside other members of the lab (primarily postdoctoral scholars and graduate students) on key research projects with the goal to better understand how drying controls invertebrate community dynamics in Mediterranean-climate streams, and to quantify biodiversity responses to habitat and flow restoration actions in a range of aquatic ecosystems (i.e., urban rivers, tidal wetlands, and Sierra Nevada streams).

Work will be conducted in the Ruhi Lab located on the UCB campus, as well as various California field sites (e.g., Pinnacles National Park, Kings River Experimental Watershed, Los Angeles River). Transportation will be provided, if necessary.

Responsibilities and Job Duties (while not limited to) may include participation and/or assistance with;
  • Monitoring of the Hydrological and biological endpoints , at the lab's field sites
  • Field experiments to assess the biodiversity consequences of stream drying
  • The design and implementation of protocols to sort and identify stream benthic macroinvertebrates
  • Quality-control of taxonomic data sets and document invertebrate diversity
  • Maintenance, organization and upkeep of Lab and/or Field site equipment and work spaces

Qualifications Basic qualifications (required at time of application)
  • Bachelor's Degree (or equivalent international degree) or enrollment in a Bachelor's Degree Program

Preferred qualifications
  • Bachelor's Degree in (an area of) Biology
  • Training and/or hands-on experience in aquatic ecology research, and
  • Basic knowledge of freshwater invertebrate taxonomy
