POSITION VACANCY ANNOUNCEMENT

Work Location: School of Nutrition and Food Sciences, Baton Rouge, LA 70803

 

Position Description:  The candidate is expected to form a high-impact bridge, in an emerging area, with faculty in nutrition, food science, microbiology, and engineering and contribute to understanding the function of the microbiome in maintaining health and preventing chronic disease. Responsibilities include the development of health research in understanding how the changes in microbiome due to diet, lifestyle, environmental exposure, or age affect health and chronic disease. Teaching responsibilities will include teaching two courses per year. Additional teaching may be required when needed. Candidates with expertise in bioinformatics, molecular biology approaches, and microbiome function in relation to diet, lifestyle, environmental exposure, aging, and chronic disease are encouraged to apply. To support research efforts, both basic and clinical cores at Pennington Biomedical Research Center (PBRC), LSU Veterinary Medicine, and a laboratory will be available for the successful applicant's research program.

 

General Information:

The SNFS currently consists of 21 faculty members, 13 research/extension associates, and 5 supporting staff members. There are over 200 undergraduate students and 38 graduate students. The SNFS has a BS degree program in Nutrition and Food Sciences with areas of concentration in Dietetics (ACEND accredited); Nutritional Sciences / Premed; Nutrition, Health, and Society; and Food Science and Technology / Premed. The MS and Ph.D. degree programs in Nutrition and Food Sciences offer areas of concentration in Food and Bioprocessing Systems, Food Science and Technology, Human Nutrition, and Molecular Nutrition.

 

The LSU Agricultural Center and LSU maintain state-of-the-art research facilities, and faculty have access to extensive infrastructure and collaborative opportunities within the SNFS, and across campus. This includes the PBRC Genomics Core that has state-of-the-art instruments for DNA and RNA sequencing. Bioinformatics support is also available.  Pennington Biomedical Research Center also has state-of-the-art clinical research facilities and a metabolic kitchen. The LSU Center for Computation & Technology and Information Technology Services has the necessary support structure for high-performance

computing resources and expertise at LSU (http://www.hpc.lsu.edu). The infrastructure for intensive bioinformatics is available for LSU faculty, including tools for sequence assembly, among others.

Qualification Requirements: A Ph.D. or equivalent degree in Nutrition, Food Science, Molecular Biology, Bioengineering, or closely related fields with expertise in core areas as identified above is required. Post-doctoral experience is preferred with a scholarly emphasis on the microbiome. Evidence of research excellence, the ability to develop and conduct extramurally funded research, and the ability to develop and effectively teach undergraduate and graduate courses and recruit and mentor students is desirable.

 

Salary and Benefits:  Salary will be commensurate with education and experience.  The LSU AgCenter has an attractive benefits package with a wide variety of benefit options.
