Assistant/Associate Professor
(Extension/Research Soybean Agronomist)

Rank and Nature of Position: Assistant/Associate Professor; 12-month tenure track appointment. The position is 80% extension (statewide soybean specialist) and 20% research (including statewide coordinator of the soybean variety testing program). The individual will be a faculty member of the LSU AgCenter Central Region with a 20% joint appointment with the School of Plant, Environmental and Soil Sciences. This position will be the primary statewide contact for LSU AgCenter soybean extension and outreach programs.

Work Location: Dean Lee Research and Extension Center, LSU Ag Center, Alexandria, Louisiana.

Responsibilities: The successful candidate will have statewide extension responsibilities for developing, coordinating and conducting education programs for soybean production based on Best Management Practices (BMPs) for Louisiana Agriculture. He/she will work collaboratively with other LSU AgCenter faculty, private crop consultants, commodity groups, Louisiana Department of Agriculture and Forestry and Louisiana Farm Bureau to identify and address emerging issues and problems associated with soybean. The position will offer specific training opportunities for region and parish ANR agents. He/she will prepare extension publications and peer-reviewed articles in formats suitable for both hard copy and electronic dissemination, including commodity-based newsletters and web sites. The specialist will work collaboratively with other faculty to provide in-service training opportunities for extension agents. He/she also will be actively involved in planning and delivering a variety of educational programs at workshops, field days and meetings/conferences. The incumbent will be responsible for coordinating the on-farm LSU AgCenter on-farm soybean variety trials (Louisiana Core Block Program) and working with other LSU AgCenter faculty/staff to disseminate this information to clientele in a timely fashion. The successful candidate will be required to develop a plan of work for extension programming, implement a system of program evaluation, and report accomplishments according to LSU AgCenter guidelines. He/she will also be required to develop a research project proposal (Hatch) to investigate and improve agronomic systems based on BMPs for soybean, provide leadership/coordination to the statewide soybean variety testing / demonstration program, and publish the findings in appropriate outlets. Extramural funding to support the research and extension program must be secured from federal and state agencies, commodity (state and national) research boards, and agro-industries. The successful candidate will work closely with the regional director as well as other research and extension faculty to ensure that his/her research and extension programs support the mission of the LSU AgCenter. The candidate will also participate in graduate student education. Participation in regional, departmental and campus committees is expected as a faculty member in a land grant university. Continued education development through association with professional societies and attendance at national and international conferences will be required.

Qualification Requirements: Ph.D. in Agronomy, Plant Science, Soil Science or other appropriate agriculture-related field is required. Experience in production of agronomic crops, pest management, soil fertility and plant nutrition is highly desirable. Good interpersonal skills and leadership abilities are required for working effectively with diverse professional and lay audiences and cooperators. The candidate must be able to communicate effectively (orally and in writing) with diverse audiences including scientific peers, clientele, and agribusiness representatives. Development of scholarly (peer-reviewed) articles and educational curricula/programs for appropriate publications/journals and other outlets, including LSU AgCenter numbered publications, is required for professional development.

Salary and Benefits: Salary will be commensurate with education and experience. The LSU AgCenter has an attractive benefits package with a wide variety of benefit options.
