Degree and area of specialization:
PhD in Animal Science, Biochemistry, Physiology, Biomedical Engineering, or related field.
Tenure-track position. Associate and full Professor candidates must possess experience and scholarly credentials suitable for appointment with tenure at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, as well as a sustained record of professional achievement as indicated by outstanding teaching, sponsored research and publications, and demonstrated leadership activities in the field.
Minimum number of years and type of relevant work experience:
- Post-doctoral research experience with grantsmanship and peer-reviewed publication record and/or intellectual property generation.
- Evidence of professional or academic experience in instruction and animal agriculture.
- Demonstration of ability to apply new technologies and a passion for animal biologics research and development.
- Well-developed interpersonal communication skills.
The Department of Animal Sciences in the College of Agricultural and Life Sciences invites applications for a nine-month (academic year) tenure-track position at the Assistant, Associate, or Full Professor level in Animal Biologics. Animal biologics are molecules or tissues that are derived from the harvest of livestock and poultry for food. Many animal biologics are used in animal and human health, e.g., heparin and extracellular matrix. Animal biologics is grounded in the pillars of sustainability ¿ environmental conservation, social benefit and economic development. In addition, the position is aligned with the new, $50 million Meat Science and Animal Biologics Discovery building. This position has unique responsibilities in a new research field in a new building.
The position includes research, instruction and outreach components. The successful candidate will develop a novel, extramurally funded research program in Animal Biologics through competitive federal funding and sponsored research agreements with industry partners. The position has responsibility to lead discovery for new animal biologics, develop purification and delivery methods, test bio-efficacy, and assist industry partners in scaling toward commercialization.
Instruction will include teaching an undergraduate course in the Animal Science curriculum. The 235 undergraduates in Animal and Dairy Science are diverse, appreciate conceptual as well as hands-on instruction, and prepare for post-graduate professional education or employment. The successful candidate will also develop and teach a graduate course and advise undergraduates.
The Animal Biologics faculty member will collaborate with faculty in the Animal Sciences and Dairy Science Departments in developing and training their graduate students and post-docs. The intention is for the Animal Biologics faculty member to collaborate with scientists across this campus to recruit interest and expertise to animal biologics discovery.
The successful applicant will develop a vibrant, independent, extramurally-funded research program in animal biologics discovery. Undergraduate and graduate teaching and mentoring of undergraduate and graduate students are included, though adjustments may be made to aid the successful applicant in establishing their research program in the early years.
