Dr. Xiaonan Lu’s Food Safety Laboratory at UBC invites applications for a part time Research Associate position (75%) with an anticipated start date of September 1, 2019. The position is located in the Food, Nutrition and Health (FNH) program in the Faculty of Land and Food Systems (Vancouver campus) ( The successful candidate will execute basic research exploring fundamental stress responses of leading foodborne pathogens (e.g., Salmonella and Campylobacter) and the roles of new/unknown genetic elements identified through genome sequencing. The candidate will work closely with Dr. Xiaonan Lu (Associate Professor in Food Science) and graduate students, and will be involved in collaborative work with different research laboratories on UBC Vancouver campus. The appointment will be for 1 year with the possibility of extension.

Candidates must have a PhD, preferably in molecular microbiology, and preference will be given to those with experience with molecular microbiology. Candidates with demonstrated contributions relating to genome sequencing, transcriptomics, and/or molecular manipulation (e.g., cloning, generation of knockouts, etc.) are encouraged to apply. Candidates are responsible for training graduate students for the basic molecular techniques, such as PCR, qPCR, DNA/RNA extraction, RNA-seq, characterization of antibiotic resistance and bacterial stress/injury etc.
