Position overview

Position title: Assistant/Associate Project Scientist - Cannabis Research
Salary range: The UC academic salary scales set the minimum pay determined by rank and step at appointment. The current base salary range for this position is $74,100-$94,300 . "Off-scale" salaries, which yield compensation that is higher than the published system-wide salary at the designated rank and step, are offered when necessary to meet competitive conditions.

Percent time: 100%

Anticipated start: February 2025

Position duration: One year with the possibility of extension based on performance and availability of funding.

Position description

The Department of Environmental Science, Policy, and Management at the University of California, Berkeley seeks applications for an Assistant/Associate Project Scientist in the Grantham Lab, in the area of cannabis research.

The applicant will contribute to understanding of cannabis agriculture in California. Focal research areas shall include:

  1. Characterizing cannabis land and water use practices.
  2. Measuring the effects of cannabis agriculture on ecological systems.
  3. Quantifying the effects of policies on agricultural practices and the environment.


Research Duties:

  1. Compiling and analyzing data from state and regional cannabis permitting programs.
  2. Designing and conducting surveys with cannabis farmers.
  3. Analyzing geospatial data (land use, climate, and other environmental factors).
  4. Performing statistical analysis to quantify the relationship between cannabis agricultural practices (land- and water-use) and environmental factors.


The candidate is expected to contribute to original peer-reviewed research articles demonstrating substantial leadership and contributions to the field. The candidate shall also aid in acquiring and managing funding to support the research program. They will be responsible for co-writing proposals for funding from federal and state agencies and other funding organizations, helping to satisfy reporting requirements requested by funders, and assisting in managing budgets and projects following sound project management principles.

The candidate will collaborate with a network of scientists, conservationists, and the public to integrate scientific knowledge of cannabis to inform policies and education/outreach programs. Professional activities shall include participation in professional societies and conferences appropriate to their field. Organization of and participation in public meetings and workshops, and serving on technical advisory committees is encouraged.

Qualifications
Basic qualifications (required at time of application)
PhD (or equivalent international degree)

Preferred qualifications

  • At least four years of research experience (including PhD research) in the area of land use change science, agricultural water use, and environmental impact assessment.
  • A strong record of publication in relevant research areas, including environmental science, fish and wildlife ecology, natural resource management, and agricultural sciences.
  • Expertise in cannabis agricultural practices, research, and policy.
  • Quantitative data management and analysis skills, including statistical modeling.
