Assistant Professor – Poultry/Animal Scientist: Behavior and Well-being

The Department of Poultry Science at Auburn University ( is seeking applications for the position of Assistant Professor – Poultry/Animal Scientist: Behavior and Well-being. The position is a nine-month, tenure track at the rank of assistant professor. The successful candidate will have a 70% research and 30% instruction appointment. The projected start date is August 16, 2020.

Responsibilities: The individual will be expected to develop a strong research and instructional program in poultry/animal welfare with a focus on broiler chicken and layer chicken behavior and well-being. The successful candidate will develop and maintain a nationally and internationally recognized, extramurally (government and industry) funded research program on poultry/animal behavior and well-being with an emphasis on broiler behavior and well-being. The candidate will be expected to collaborate with other scientists within, but not limited to the Colleges of Agriculture, Veterinary Medicine and/or Human Sciences as well as Extension specialists/agents and poultry industry leaders in research on poultry/animal behavior and well-being. The incumbent will teach undergraduate-level foundation courses in General poultry and Layer management/commercial egg production, and graduate-level courses in Applied poultry-animal behavior and Applied ethology. A strong graduate-student training program is expected.

Qualifications: Minimum qualifications include: 1) an earned Ph.D. from an accredited institution in Poultry/Animal Science or related field at the time employment begins; 2) experience and training in research in the area of poultry/animal behavior and well-being, and the ability to independently develop and conduct research in this area; 3) demonstrated or potential ability to teach college-level classes and mentor graduate students; 4) strong written and interpersonal communication skills; 5) documented evidence of extramural funding efforts. The candidate must meet eligibility requirements for work in the United States at the time the appointment is scheduled to begin and continue working legally for the term of employment.

Desired qualifications: Postdoctoral experience or commercial poultry industry experience.
