Utah Valley University (UVU) invites applications for a tenure-track position in Field Botany within the Department of Biology to begin August 2020. UVU is a teaching university located in Orem, Utah (just 40 miles south of Salt Lake City) and at the interface of the Great Basin, Rocky Mountains, and the Colorado Plateau. UVU welcomes candidates whose experience in teaching, scholarship, or community service has prepared them to contribute to our commitment to diversity and inclusive excellence.

The successful candidate will be expected to:

Teach introductory botany courses including Field Botany (BOT 2050) and Flora of Utah (BOT 2100), upper-division botany courses such as Introduction to Grasses (BOT 4500), and introductory biology courses for both majors (BIOL 1620) and non-majors (BIOL 1010).

Develop additional courses in the area of expertise to meet department needs.

Establish a research program that includes undergraduate students in area of field botany and results in peer-reviewed publications.

Serve on department, college, and university committees to promote success for students, colleagues, and the university.

Required Qualifications:

Graduation from an accredited institution with a Ph.D. in botany, plant biology, or a closely-related field. ABD applications will be accepted if doctorate verification is received by June 30, 2020.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

Demonstrable knowledge of the theory and practice of teaching botany and general biology, and research methods in field botany.
Demonstrable skill in incorporating evidence-based pedagogy, such as active-learning techniques and the innovative use of instructional technology.
Demonstrable abilities to develop curricula and teach courses, communicate in written and verbal form, and work collaboratively with faculty, staff and students.
Demonstrable ability and desire to mentor undergraduate student research.
Working knowledge of the regional flora.
Demonstrable skill in teaching large and small classes including field classes.
Experience in planning and executing overnight field trips that are safe, engaging, academically rigorous, and protective of the environment.
Demonstrable abilities to work in teams with other faculty and staff, network and collaborate with commercial, agency and/or non-profit organizations involved in botany and conservation and involve students in hands-on experiences with those organizations
Experience supervising, advising, and mentoring students and staff in order to promote success.

Preferred Qualifications:

Post-doctoral teaching or research experience. Preference will be given to candidates with excellent teaching skills, in the classroom as well as in the field. Experience in or and/or commitment to hybrid and online instruction is preferred. Preference will also be given to candidates familiar with the regional flora.

Physical Requirements:

Ability to conduct botanical field research is essential: Must be able to handle a climate that includes extremes of mountain cold and desert heat, as well as irregular outdoor terrain.
