Work Location: Botanic Gardens, LSU Ag Center, Baton Rouge, Louisiana.
Responsibilities: This position will report to the Director of the Botanic Gardens and assists faculty, staff and students with research and outreach projects studying the ecology of urban forests, wetlands and meadows. The Burden Woods and adjoining wetlands, meadows and Barton Arboretum serve as an outdoor laboratory and classroom for hands-on learning experiences. As such the RA will be required to assist with the development and implementation of research and educational programs that include the environmental and ecological aspects of these areas. The RA will assist with the planting of new trees and maintaining the mature trees in the arboretum and woodlands. It is the responsibility of this position to assist with, identify and care for the needs of all major and ornamental trees to assure proper form and optimum health. This position will also be responsible for supervising student interns and volunteers.
Qualification Requirements: A bachelor’s or master’s degree in plant sciences, horticulture, forestry or related discipline from an accredited college or university. Other degree may be accepted with experience or education related to job duties. Licensure as a Chemical Applicator and Arborist is expected to be obtained within one year of employment and maintained through proper testing, licensing, and ongoing professional course work. The RA is expected to safely operate arborist equipment such as chainsaws, pruners and facility equipment.
