(Assistant Farm Manager)
Work Location: Botanic Gardens at Burden Center, Louisiana State University Agricultural Center, Baton Rouge, Louisiana.
Responsibilities: This position is responsible for implementation and maintenance of plant based research and education programs; maintenance of all vehicles and equipment; supports the Farm Manager of the Burden Farm; reports to the Research Associate/Farm Coordinator. Field Research and Outreach Programs: Implementation of research projects and outreach projects, Propagation and transplants, Field preparation, Planting, Data collection, Harvesting and Postharvest storage. Field Management: Operates and makes adjustments to complex agricultural and/or research equipment, Implement best management practices for Disease, insect and weed control (Mixes and applies fungicides, insecticides and herbicides in accordance with Federal and State label direction and follows all rules and regulations set forth by the university, the state, and the EPA.), Soil fertility (Mixes and applies appropriate liquid and granular fertilizers), Irrigation and drainage (Installs overhead and drip irrigation and maintains field drainage.) Equipment Maintenance: Compiles lists of supplies, equipment and tools needed for research activities and equipment maintenance.
Oversees maintenance shop and maintenance of all farm vehicles and machinery: Vehicle repair (Trucks and ATVs), Machinery repair (Tractors, implements, spray rigs), some small engine repair (Lawn mowers, string trimmers), Oil change and lubrication, Blade sharpening, Maintains fuel supply.
Qualification Requirements: A bachelor’s or master’s degree in plant sciences, horticulture or related discipline from an accredited college or university. Other degree may be accepted with experience or education related to job duties.
