Primary Purpose of Position
Primary responsibilities for this position include, but not limited to, conducting field and laboratory applied ecology and IPM research and other duties to be determined by your direct supervisor. The selected applicant will provide support in research and writing proposals for extramural funding in IPM Research and writing peer-reviewed publications. He/she will conduct research on insect ecology of pests of field crops including vegetables; evaluate cultivars for dual purpose production; develop sustainable alternative management of pests in food production systems.
Primary Function of Organizational Unit
The Integrated Pest Management Laboratory at NC A&T State is based in the College of Agriculture and Environmental Sciences. The IPM Lab carries out fundamental and applied research toward the development of farmer-friendly, ecologically sound pest management technology for the efficient, and safe production of vegetables and fruit by small growers. It also conducts research on post-harvest crop protection and residential pest management. A major goal of this lab is to train students in pest management science and its application and increase awareness in the university and grower community on the need for, and importance of, safe pest management at all levels.
This position requires a Ph.D. in Entomology with a strong quantitative skills and experience in conducting research on pests of pests of vegetables; ability to conduct insecticide safety evaluations; writing of research proposals and a culture of scientific publications.
A strong background is required in analytical approach to problem solving in different biological systems, research design and statistical analysis using different platforms. Some training in molecular and/or biochemical sciences would be an advantage.
Preferred Years Experience, Skills, Training, Education
At least 3 years of doctoral research and/or 1year post-PhD graduation experience in a university or research center. Demonstrated experience in developing proposals and conducting research in insect ecology and pesticide safety; pest management research leading to an applied ecological focus or work related to small-holder agriculture. Proven record of peer-reviewed publications and presentation of research.
