POSITION VACANCY ANNOUNCEMENT

This is a one-year state funded, non-tenure track position. Continuation of employment will be dependent on funding availability, job performance, and continued need for the appointment.
 

Work Location: This position will be housed at the Louisiana State University AgCenter – LaHouse Resource Center in Baton Rouge, LA.

 

Position Description: The Assistant Professor of Research is a 9-month fiscal, non-tenured track position in the LSU Agricultural Center Department of Biological & Agricultural Engineering at the LaHouse Resource Center. This position is within the field of natural hazard risk assessment research focused on risks and mitigation opportunities within Louisiana. This position collaborates with stakeholders across the state in support of this research and the appointee will conduct research, manage projects, prepare peer-reviewed research products, and attend and present at national and international conferences. The grant supporting this position begin in 2023 and end in 2026.

 

Duties include:

60% This position will be responsible for the multi-hazard risk assessment for the State of Louisiana in accordance with FEMA’s State Mitigation Planning Policy Guide (FP 302-094-2). In general, this includes 1) acquisition and analysis of historical records of natural hazard occurrences and resulting damage or economic loss for multiple hazards that affect Louisiana using geographical information systems (GIS); 2) consideration of future climate and future population scenarios in development of methodologies that evaluate changing risk over time; 3) lead authorship of the Louisiana State Hazard Mitigation Plan risk assessment document, which supports the overall planning efforts of the state; 4) development of a web-mapping platform to host risk assessment layers for statewide availability; 5) document and archive all data, methods, and products resulting from this project; 6) collaborate with other project staff and statewide stakeholders.

 

20% The job duties include, but not limited to, organizing and leading meetings, preparing progress and final reports for compliance with federal contract requirements, conducting literature reviews, collecting and analyzing data, attending grant related meetings, preparing publications, reports and presentations. This position will also be responsible for the preparation of scientific maps, charts, and journal articles for purposes of scientific communication.

 

10% The successful candidate is also expected to manage and build their own research programs according to the policies, mission, priorities, and strategies of LaHouse Resource Center, the Department of Biological & Agricultural Engineering, LSU Agricultural Center, and the State of Louisiana. The candidate will build strategic partnerships with local, regional, and national partners in support of this research.

 

10% Other duties as assigned.

 

Qualification Requirements:

Minimum Qualifications:

PhD in Oceanography, Geoscience, Coastal Science, Engineering or a closely related field. Must have specific experience in natural hazard risk assessment and GIS analysis. Knowledge and skills in organization, time management, and data management are essential. Good written and oral communication skills are required.

 

Preferred Qualifications:

PhD in Oceanography, Geoscience, Coastal Science, Engineering or a closely related field.

Specific Experience in the following:

Demonstrated experience in hazard mitigation planning risk assessment complying with FEMA requirements.

Demonstrated experience collaborating with multi-disciplinary teams.

Excellent written and oral communication skills

Postdoctoral researcher experience.

 

Salary and Benefits: Salary will be commensurate with qualifications and experience. The LSU AgCenter has an attractive benefits package with a wide variety of benefit options.
