Louisiana State University is seeking a highly qualified student to pursue a PhD or MS in the School of Plant, Environmental and Soil Sciences for a project in Ornamental Horticulture. Student research will focus on resource efficiency and sustainability in nursery crop production. This assistantship has opportunities to develop projects to fit interests of the student. Primary fields of interest and potential projects areas may include soilless substrate science, irrigation efficiency and technologies, water and nutrient movement in containers or the landscape, plant-water relations, and sustainable landscape systems, among other potential focal areas. This graduate program will focus on both basic scientific concepts and applicable innovations in order to identify issues and refine cultural practices in the nursery or landscape industry.
The student will split time between main Louisiana State University Campus in Baton Rouge, LA and the Hammond Research Station (approx. 50 miles from campus in Hammond, LA) where the majority of the research will be conducted. Low to no cost on-site housing may be made available for extensive stay periods at the Hammond Research Station. The student will receive a competitive 12-month stipend that includes tuition. Research will occur in both the lab and outdoors and at times will involve periods working in unfavorable conditions.
Applicants must have earned a B.S. or M.S. (preferred for PhD applicants) in horticulture, plant science, soils, environmental sciences, or a similar field. Applicants should be proactive, self-motivated, and dedicated, with a strong desire to learn and to pursue a graduate degree. Applicants with a proven track record of effective written and oral communications and laboratory skills are desired.
