Summary of Duties:

Washington State University (WSU) recently launched the Functional Genomics Initiative (FGI) to address the University's research Grand Challenge themes focused on sustainable resources for food production and sustaining health for people and animals. Through the FGI, WSU is assembling a cohesive cluster of diverse, cross-disciplinary investigators to build intellectual capacity in molecular and cellular biology, genetics, genomics and biotechnology, address societal and ethical issues in biotechnology and establish state-of-the-art research cores in gene editing and animal husbandry. To date, WSU has hired six new faculty members and two research core directors to build intellectual capacity in functional genomics. WSU participants in the FGI include the Department of Animal Sciences (AS); the Center for Reproductive Biology; the School of Molecular Biosciences; the Department of Veterinary Microbiology and Pathology; the School of Politics, Philosophy, and Public Affairs and the WSU Extension system.

The Department of Animal Sciences seeks to hire an Assistant/Associate Professor in Animal Biotechnology and Genomics Extension (60%) and Teaching (40%) starting July 1, 2022 or earlier. Applicants with expertise in genomics, biotechnology, livestock/fish production, and Extension are encouraged to apply. The priorities of the Department and the FGI are to conduct cutting-edge research that results in resilience and sustainable animal/fish agricultural systems, economic strength, and health and nutrition. The candidate is expected to establish a strong Extension program centered on genomics and biotechnological innovations to animal/fish production. This position will also serve a critical need for the Department of Animal Sciences and the FGI at WSU in the development of a dynamic graduate and undergraduate teaching program focused on the use of genomics and biotechnology in animal/fish agriculture. This person will be a dynamic individual who excels at building relationships with all stakeholders to identify and address industry needs. The person in this position must appreciate the animal agricultural industry and the role of biotechnology (e.g. CRISPR/Cas9) in animal production. Collaborative team opportunities include creation and utilization of novel methods including genome edited livestock and fish models, animal genomics/genetics, livestock health, reproductive biology, environmental management across species and disciplines with the goal of improved animal productivity, efficiency, and sustainability

The faculty member will demonstrate potential to develop a unique and impactful Extension (which includes applied research, scholarship, and outreach/engagement) and teaching program. They will be expected to collaborate with other scientists in AS, FGI and the University, leaders in the livestock, aquaculture and biotechnology industries and outreach workshops in various areas of biotechnology/genomics. WSU has a strong network of Extension professionals who are committed to Washington agriculture and this person will have excellent county and regional level collaborators. A central focus of the position is to translate fundamental genomics research to animal agriculture producers and trade associations and enhance synergy of statewide programs through research and technology transfer/outreach collaborations with other faculty at affiliated agencies and institutions. This person will also have a familiarity with multi-cultural and different socioeconomic audiences, an interest in working with people from diverse backgrounds, and a commitment to the principles of diversity.

A person with a 40% academic appointment will make significant contributions in the teaching of undergraduate, graduate, and professional students. In this position a person will teach a large enrollment undergraduate course in biotechnology/genetics and applications of genetic technology in livestock and fish open to all students in the university at least once per year (WSU UCORE); teach a graduate course for AS and other graduate students in the person's area of expertise; teach other graduate level courses in AS including Seminar in Animal Science and Professional Writing; contribute in courses such as Introductory Animal Sciences, Animal Breeding and Genetics, Beef Cattle Production, Dairy Cattle Production, and others as appropriate; contribute to the veterinary curriculum for professional students.
