This position is a fixed-term, 12-month appointment, Agriculture (field crops) Faculty Research Assistant with assignment to the Weed Science Project in the Department of Crop and Soil Science. It is anticipated that this will be a long-term position, annual renewal contingent on performance, and reappointment is at the discretion of the Department Head. The incumbent contributes to the missions of Oregon State University Extension Service (OSUES) and Agricultural Experiment Station (OSUAES) with principle responsibility for providing technical support for the Weed Science research and Extension program.
55% Responsible for management of field research activities in support of weed management and herbicide evaluation research and outreach education.
Responsibilities include, but are not limited to, all phases of the Weed Science program with specific duties that include design, completion, evaluation and publication of field weed research studies. The incumbent interfaces with growers, industry groups and extension and research faculty to conduct and report on weed science research efforts. The incumbent will solicit herbicides and other research inputs from industry representatives as needed. The incumbent will also collaborate and assist project personnel, graduate students, other OSU faculty, and collaborating research and extension programs with general research activities. This includes contributing to experimental design, management of research trials, seed preparation and planting, harvest, sampling, evaluation of crop quality characteristics, data collection and analyses, and dissemination of results. Additional responsibilities include assisting graduate students in the Weed Science Group with thesis research and supervising undergraduate student workers.
25% Scholarly and Outreach Education Activities
The incumbent interfaces with growers, industry groups and extension and research faculty to conduct and report on weed science research efforts. Therefore, the incumbent will summarize and analyze data and report research findings at grower and industry meetings throughout the state, scientific meetings and in extension and scientific literature. The incumbent will keep records and provide necessary reports to the Project Leader, Department Head, and CAS including plans of work, reports of accomplishment, and statistical reports. The incumbent will contribute to publication of reports and papers related to research project activities and review literature and electronic sources needed to conduct and finish research trials and project activities. Travel off campus to conduct research and outreach education activities throughout OR is expected.
5% Maintain, operate, and secure equipment used for field and greenhouse research
Maintain and order supplies as needed for conduct of research activities. Maintain all appropriate safety and training records. Responsible for general maintenance and repair of field and greenhouse equipment, coordination and sharing of equipment between OSU projects, and rental of equipment as necessary. Responsible for purchasing of supplies and small equipment as needed for timely completion of studies. Responsible for maintaining service contracts and arranging for repair or service on major equipment items as needed. Facilitate purchasing of general supplies and small equipment, under direction of Project Leader. Take periodic inventory of general supplies to insure availability when needed. Consultation with other project personnel, including graduate students, is expected regarding needs and purchases as necessary to insure availability and avoid duplications and delays. Coordinate and arrange vehicles, rental equipment, and Weed Science project or motor pool trucks as needed. Responsible for general organization and upkeep of facilities assigned to the Weed Science Project in cooperation with other project staff and compliance and maintenance of all safety training needs and records.
5% Responsible for general supervision, management, and coordination of student hourly workers and their work schedules
Incumbent is responsible for recruitment, hiring, and firing of hourly workers, under the general supervision of the Project Leader. Maintain records of time sheets, provide summaries of hours and labor projections as needed by the Project Leader. In collaboration with all project staff, coordinate activities and training to ensure safe operations of equipment and safety of project personnel in accordance with state, OSU and OSHA guidelines. Contribute to development and implementation of safety and safety training program for Weed Science project staff and hourly workers. This includes keeping up-to-date with OSHA and State safety guidelines and maintaining the appropriate pesticide applicators license. Collaborate in training sessions for staff and hourly on annual basis and maintain all records on safety training and certification of project employees. Monitor staff and hourly work as needed to insure continued safe operation of equipment and safe use of herbicides and other chemicals throughout the year.
5% Professional Development
Participate in professional development opportunities that enhance technical, educational and leadership skills at the departmental and CAS levels. Participate in regional and national society meetings and functions.
Serve on professional society, University, College, Department, and Extension committees as appropriate.
Minimum Required Qualifications
*B.S. degree in agronomy, crop science, plant science, horticulture or a related field.
*Experience in management of applied field research.
*Experience with computer spreadsheet and word processing programs and statistical analysis software.
*Experience with field research techniques including experimental design, maintenance and evaluation of field plots, data collection and statistical analysis.
*Demonstrated ability to work independently and in a team atmosphere.
*Strong written and verbal communication skills.
*Must have or be able to obtain an Oregon demonstration/research pesticide applicators license within three months of hire date.
*This position requires driving a University vehicle or a personal vehicle on behalf of the University; therefore, the incumbent must successfully complete a Motor Vehicle History Check, possess and maintain a current, valid driver’s license in their state of residence, be determined to be position qualified and self-report convictions (as per Voluntary and Compulsory Driver Standards OAR 125-155-0200) as per OAR 576-056-0000 et seq.
