Position: The Department of Nutrition and Food Science at the University of Maryland, College Park invites applications for a 9 month tenure/tenure-track position at the level of Assistant/Associate Professor (50% research and 50% teaching) to begin in August, 2020.

Description: The successful candidate will be expected to develop and maintain an independent, innovative, and competitively funded research program in food systems innovation as applied to improve food safety and sustainability. We seek outstanding scientists engaged in emerging areas of food research including but not limited to microbial and chemical food safety, application of omics to improve food safety, emergence of antimicrobial resistance in food system, development of innovative technologies to detect and control foodborne pathogens, mitigation of food loss and food-waste, utilization of food processing waste, food biotechnology, and fermentation. Other areas of research with direct relevance to food safety systems will also be considered. In addition, the successful candidate will direct doctoral and master’s student research, advise undergraduate students, and contribute to graduate and undergraduate teaching including food microbiology. The selected applicant will have a balanced research and teaching appointment. There will be opportunities to collaborate with scientists affiliated with the College of Agriculture and Natural Resources, the Center for Food Safety and Security Systems (CFS3) and Joint Institute for Food Safety and Applied Nutrition (JIFSAN), the food industry, and various government agencies including the FDA, USDA, etc.
Qualifications: The candidates must have an earned doctorate in food science or a related discipline and be outstanding research scientist for their current rank. Post-doctoral experience is desirable for the Assistant Professor level position. Applicants for Associate Professor Position are required to have an established track record of external funding as well as a strong record of publication in recognized journals. Excellent communication skills and commitment to teaching and mentoring graduate and undergraduate students is vital.
