As a Beef/Forage Enterprise and Marketing State Specialized Extension Agent (SSA), you will work 100% for University of Florida/IFAS Extension. You will be co-supervised by the Directors of the Southwest Extension District and the Range Cattle Research and Education Center (RCREC) in Ona, FL where the position is based. We are looking for candidates with both academic and people skills who work well in teams, honor their commitments, and innovate in a rapidly changing world. The successful candidate will demonstrate excellent customer service and will respond to client needs in a timely and professional manner. This role provides the opportunity to make a positive impact in Florida’s cattle industry as you work with extension faculty, staff, and stakeholders.

What you will do as an SSA:

  • Plan, develop, deliver, evaluate, and report on a statewide educational program focused on beef and forage economic needs of clientele groups.
  • Develop and update enterprise budgets to assist producers in analyzing the profitability and sustainability of beef cattle and forage agricultural enterprises.
  • Teach traditional and non-traditional approaches to market development for beef and forage products and improve the marketing skills of producers.
  • Provide leadership in the development of extension educational programs and participate in educational programs in various functions such as a planning team member, coordinator, speaker, moderator, etc.
  • Provide training in beef cattle and forage economics for extension agents and extension specialists, and actively work with statewide teams of faculty to educate stakeholders and the public about beef cattle and forage economic issues.
  • Establish a standing as an expert resource and point-of-contact for advanced clientele, industry-related businesses, and governmental agencies, while supporting, strengthening, and participating in county-based extension programs.
  • Collaborate with UF/IFAS stakeholders and external partners to ensure that the issues of the clientele are understood and successfully addressed, while contributing to the strengthening of Florida’s economy by providing educational support for long-term sustainable beef cattle and forage production.
  • Provide contributions, support, training, and mentorship to county extension faculty regarding beef cattle and forages economics. Align programs with the UF/IFAS Extension Roadmap.
  • Work in cooperation with the faculty from the Food and Resource Economics Department, the Departments of Animal Sciences, Agronomy, and Soil, Water, and Ecosystem Sciences, and other state and county faculty as appropriate to advance extension priority initiatives.
  • Develop collaborative partnerships with Animal Science, Agronomy, and Agricultural Economics organizations in the Southeastern U.S.
  • Develop effective teaching tools such as publications, fact sheets, EDIS documents, presentations, worksheets, web-based tools, and other creative works to enhance the delivery and understanding of information on beef cattle and forage economics. Delivery methods shall include organized education events like in-person or online workshops, conferences, seminars, short courses, etc.
  • Secure external funding for programs through grants, contracts, gifts, and/or fees.
  • Assume other assignments and responsibilities in support of the total extension program as assigned by supervisors.
  • Support and commit to an inclusive, diverse, equitable, and accessible environment.
  • Serve as a role model to the community.

As an SSA, you will have expectations beyond those of a county extension agent. For example, you will:

  • Support, train, and mentor county extension agents.
  • Provide educational programs to achieve a balance reflective of Florida's population diversity and to address the unique educational needs of regional stakeholders.
  • Collaborate with state extension specialists and other extension colleagues to conduct practical and applied research projects and on-farm trials, engaging social scientists when appropriate.
  • Serve as project leader for extramural funding that supports and enhances the extension program.
  • Work with other regional and state Extension Agents (water, vegetables, rural and agribusiness development, dairy, 4-H youth development, and coastal ecosystems) in a functional, complementary, and effective working group.

What you will bring (required):

  • A master’s degree. Degrees must be from an accredited college or university in economics, animal science, forage agronomy, or a related field.
  • Strong written and verbal interpersonal and communication skills.
  • Ability to establish solid partnerships and to find innovative ways to attract new audiences and volunteers.
  • A commitment to customer service.
  • Ability to possess (or be able to obtain) a valid Florida driver’s license.
  • Flexibility with working hours; willingness to work irregular hours, including evenings, weekends, and overnight travel.

What you will bring (preferred):

  • Experience working in the field of beef cattle and/or forage economics.
  • Experience creating lesson plans, developing instructional materials, and applying teaching methods appropriate for the audience
  • Expertise in getting groups to work together for a higher goal, managing competing priorities, and adaptability to handle unexpected situations.
  • Experience as a communicator who is comfortable presenting in front of small and large crowds.
  • Ability to establish solid partnerships.
  • Experience acquiring extramural funding.
