Position Summary:

The Associate Extension Educator will be responsible for planning, organizing, instructing, and evaluating Produce Safety Rule training programs and technical assistance for produce growers, Extension Educators, and regulatory personnel statewide. This will include Program Planning and Implementation (20%), Outreach and Education (60%) and Program Evaluation and Reporting (20%). The Educator will collaborate with appropriate state, district, and county faculty and partners as part of a team consisting of University of Idaho on-campus and off-campus faculty and staff members, and Idaho State Department of Agriculture collaborators.

Outreach & Extension: Collaborate with appropriate state, district, and county faculty and partners as part of a team consisting of U of I on-campus and off-campus faculty and staff members, and Idaho State Department of Agriculture collaborators.

Network with organizations offering various produce safety education and outreach to avoid duplication and maximize statewide efforts.

Coordinate Produce Safety program efforts with the appropriate county/district Extension offices, agencies, coalitions, associations and organizations and contribute to state programs.

Coordinate and participate in local, regional and statewide training programs to deliver the Produce Safety Alliance or other approved, developed curriculum to increase grower knowledge and ability to comply with regulations and market demands for food safety practices.

Conduct on-farm readiness reviews for Idaho produce growers prior to a regulatory inspection.

Provide research based knowledge through educational activities including direct teaching, webinars and other meetings and workshops for fruit and vegetable growers as well as other produce industry personnel.

Ensure a major program emphasis on the adoption of Good Agricultural Practices (GAPs) and produce safety practices on farms and in packinghouses, and assist growers in compliance with newly proposed federal regulation (FDA Produce Safety Rule)

Communicate through public presentations at regional grower conferences, Extension meetings and governmental and non-governmental agencies.

Prepare articles and content for local and state print, digital and social media.

Conduct evaluations of all training programs to report on performance and improve program effectiveness.

Maintain and update shared databases with training evaluations and certification information for trainers and produce growers.

Develop verbal and written presentations of program activities, and share impact with team members, advisory committees and other stakeholders.

Minimum Qualifications:

Bachelors degree in Food Science, Microbiology, Horticulture, Environmental Science, Agricultural Science, Education or equivalent, or a closely related discipline with relevant food safety or industry work experience. The required degree(s) must be completed by the date of hire.

Knowledge of Good Agricultural Practices, produce safety or the FDA Food Safety Modernization Act, and agricultural production of horticulture and specialty crops.

Ability to work well in a team, provide effective leadership for Extension programming, and provide marketing and promotion of programs.

Able to adapt research materials and published curriculum for effective oral and written presentations.

Computer literacy and good written and verbal communication skills.

Able to provide organizational structure and support for a variety of individuals and groups.

Preferred Qualifications:

Master of Science degree in Food Science, Microbiology, Horticulture, Environmental Science, Agricultural Science, Education, or a closely related discipline with 3-5 years relevant food safety or industry work experience.

Extension experience in a related field.

Knowledge of and/or experience working with Idaho agricultural producers and professionals.

Knowledge of Hispanic culture and ability to communicate in Spanish, both orally and in writing.

Physical Requirements & Working Conditions:

Willing and able to travel extensively statewide and regionally and adjust to a flexible schedule (i.e. participate in evening and weekend programs).
