The Department of Environmental Science, Policy and Management (ESPM), a multidisciplinary academic department in the College of Natural Resources (CNR) on the Berkeley campus, encompasses basic and applied aspects of biological, physical and social sciences as applied to natural resources and natural resource-based production systems in support of the education, research, and extension programs of CNR.

The Daane Laboratory in Biological Control focuses on the development of arthropod (e.g., insects, spiders, mites) control programs that have a foundation in biological control, integrated pest management and sustainable agriculture systems. Research and extension programs are conducted in vineyards, olive, stone fruit, pistachio, almond, and a mixture of vegetable cropping systems. Work is primarily conducted in the Central Valley for the tree fruit, table and raisin grape, and vegetable crops, and the north coast, Lodi-Woodbridge and central coast for winegrapes.

The Daane Laboratory in the Department of Environmental Science, Policy & Management at the University of California, Berkeley is looking for several highly motivated Junior to Assistant Specialists. Under supervision of the Project Director (Daane) and working with Post Doctorate Researchers, the candidates will perform field and laboratory studies to develop more sustainable pest control programs for vineyards and nut (almond and pistachio) crops. Key projects involve research to better understand the epidemiology of viral grape pathogens (called grape leafroll associated virus' and red blotch'). This includes studies of insect vector control, biology and ecology to reduce the spread of the vineyard pathogen. The work will primarily be conducted at two different sites, as well as at varied field locations.

The following areas of specialization are sought:
Grape Leafroll and Mealybug:
Research will primarily be conducted at the Daane Laboratory at the Kearney Agricultural Research and Extension Center http://kare.ucanr.edu/ in the San Joaquin Valley

  • Collect field and laboratory data on pest and beneficial insects in agricultural ecosystems (e.g., vineyards), at times under supervision
  • Help maintain insect colonies and greenhouse plants
  • Use GIS tools to map disease incidence in vineyards
  • Use molecular tools to determine presence of a viral pathogen in plant and insect samples
  • Enter data into the computer

  • Candidate should have good hand-eye dexterity
