Assistant/ Associate/ Full Professor of FORESTRY. A full-time, academic year, tenure-track position in the Natural Resources Management and Environmental Sciences Department (NRES) within the College of Agriculture, Food and Environmental Sciences at California Polytechnic State University, San Luis Obispo, California. Starting date is September 10, 2020, but no later than January 4, 2021. Rank and salary are commensurate with qualifications and experience.
Cal Poly has a tradition of excellence in teaching and our motto is "Learn by Doing." The ideal candidate will have broad forestry education and expertise in silviculture. The successful candidate will teach undergraduate courses in the following areas: silviculture, forest operations, forest ecology, and wildland fire and fuels management. In addition to teaching, successful candidates are expected to pursue research and professional activities. He/she will establish and maintain positive collaborative relationships with industry stakeholders in the forestry sector. He/she will advise and involve undergraduate and graduate students in hands-on-learning activities and research. Service activities will include participation on department, college, and university committees and instructionally related activities. The successful candidate will serve as a liaison between the NRES Department and the Director of Cal Poly’s Swanton Pacific Ranch (SPR) forest in Santa Cruz County with 25% assigned time for research and outreach in support of SPR.
Support of SPR will include:
Championing forest ecosystem management education and research at SPR
Engaging in research at SPR
Engaging in NR forestry courses (i.e. NR 474 – Forest Stewardship Practices, NR 475 – Senior Project Forest Stewardship)
Supporting Operations Manager in forest management and planning, including FSC
certification, timber sale planning, and CFI
Serving on Forest Management Advisory Group (FMAG
). Meets 1-2 times per year. Approved participation in FSC
meetings are reimbursable

Doctorate degree in Forestry, Silviculture or other related field by the starting date is required. Specialties in Forest Engineering, Forest Ecology, Forest Management, or related field preferred. Preference will be given to candidates with a record of excellence in teaching and research (commensurate with time since degree), as well as ability to mentor undergraduate and graduate students.
Candidates must demonstrate excellence in teaching, effective communication, and interpersonal skills. The ability to be a productive team player and to interact well with peers, students, industry, government agencies, and the general public is essential. Candidates must demonstrate commitment to diversity.
Excellent written and oral communication skills and strong interests in undergraduate and graduate teaching are required. Candidates must also demonstrate an ability to initiate, complete, secure external funding, and publish research.
Demonstrated experience and commitment to student-centered learning and teaching, as well as the ability to collaboratively work in multidisciplinary settings is required. Demonstrated proficiency in written and oral use of the English language is required.
Preference will be given to candidates with a record of excellence in teaching and research (commensurate with time since degree), as well as ability to mentor undergraduate and graduate students. ABOUT THE DEPARTMENT
The NRES Department offers B.S. degrees in Environmental Earth and Soil Sciences, Environmental Management and Protection, and Forestry and Natural Resources, and an M.S. in Environmental Science and Management. The programs enroll approximately 750 undergraduate students and 15 graduate students.
