Departmental Overview

At the College of Natural Resources (CNR), we study natural and human systems from biological, ecological, economic, and social science perspectives. With more than 120 faculty and approximately 2,200 undergraduate and 500 graduate students, we engage the issues that shape the complex, interconnected world of the 21st century, from sustainable food systems to obesity, from water policy to energy policy, and from the far-reaching impacts of climate change to the linkages between the human genome, diet, and disease.


  • Works closely with Pl to ensure timely completion of work plans, research, impact evaluation, data tracking and analysis and reporting for all objectives on two grant-funded projects focused on sustainability of urban agriculture and Karuk Tribal agroecological resilience.
  • Collaborates with project team members to translate the research into policy briefs, press releases and publications.
  • Works closely with Research Analyst (RA) to track budget expenditures, and ensure that subcontracts are renewed and subawardees are invoicing in a timely manner.
  • Keeps the Pl informed on a regular basis on budgetary status to ensure we don't overdraw or underdraw.
  • Coordinates with GSRs, staff and co-Pis to support reimbursement requests.
  • Researches and drafts complex proposals, reports, briefings, and executive summaries.
  • Evaluates subawardee and research team workplans, and provides feedback, fosters collaboration/communication and coordination among team members who share in the implementation of specific objectives.
  • Coordinates efforts with a variety of external and internal contacts such as Co-PIs at the Karuk Tribe, and UC Berkeley, and collaborators at East Bay urban farms. This includes coordinating and advising undergraduates and graduate students at UC Berkeley involved in the Karuk-UC Berkeley collaborative and Growing Roots community to support their engagement in research on these projects.
  • Prepares directives, regulations and other instructions for issuance to departments including subawards, IRB protocols. Coordinates implementation with departments that cross organizational lines as needed.
  • Other administrative duties as assigned.

Required Qualifications

  • Two years of previous project management experience, including evaluation and skills with measuring impact.
  • Experience with financial management, budget design and monitoring, purchasing, and expenditure.
  • Excellent data management, problem solving, administrative skills and attention to detail.
  • Excellent communication skills, both verbal and written.
  • Experience with publicizing activities and results to stakeholders, including via email marketing service (eg Constant Contact), and drafting press releases, newsletter content and blog posts.
  • Ability to conduct pre-post evaluations and report on outcomes with PI support.
  • Demonstrated ability to be a self-starter, work independently and as part of a team.
  • Experience working in cross-cultural settings and/or on collaborative, participatory research and/or extension projects with diverse communities.
  • Availability for occasional multi-day travel for project meetings, research/evaluation interviews and data collection.
  • Some work on weekends may be required.

  • Bachelor's degree or equivalent in an appropriate field (sustainable food systems, forestry or agriculture, natural resource management, environmental policy, Native American studies or similar) and an interest in or experience working with food security and/or Native communities.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Advanced degree in sustainable food systems, natural resource management, environmental policy, Native American studies or similar.
  • Familiarity with topics and concepts in ethno-biology, agroecology, traditional ecological knowledge, food systems research, urban farming, US food and/or forest policy and law.
  • Experience with website design, management and maintenance.
  • Two years of previous research experience including designing and managing research studies.
  • Experience with UC Berkeley campus systems and frameworks for project administration, including PI Portfolio, Bearbuy, ServiceNow, etc. or comparable experience.

Salary & Benefits

This is a non-exempt, part-time, 20-hours per week, 12 month temporary (contract) position with an opportunity for extension, with an hourly range of $24.14-$29.12.
