WORK LOCATION: Central Research Station (Beef Unit), LSU AgCenter, Baton Rouge, La.
RESPONSIBILITIES: Provide broad technical research and management support for the LSU AgCenter Central Research Station Beef Unit. Requires knowledge of research procedures and philosophy and practical application in a field research setting. Specific responsibilities will include day-to-day management of a large beef herd which supports teaching, research, and extension functions for the School of Animal Sciences. Herd management includes development of replacement heifers, market steers, cull cows, and bull purchases. In addition to bovine responsibilities, there will also be a small multi-species program component involving small ruminant and non-ruminant livestock. Hands-on duties include animal health care, research data collection, production records, animal inventory maintenance, and related duties. Responsibilities also include pasture management, infrastructure maintenance, farm equipment maintenance and repair, general budget management, and supervision of three full-time employees and numerous part-time student workers. This position reports to the Resident Director of Central Research Station administratively but works closely with faculty and the administrative head of the School of Animal Sciences with respect to teaching, research, and extension programs. This position will also be expected to interact with, assist, and support Animal Science Department graduate students, the LSU School of Veterinary Medicine, and with any other departmental personnel conducting research at this location.
QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS: Baccalaureate and/or Master’s degree in Animal Science or closely related field. Other degrees will be accepted if combined with at least four years of closely related experience. Knowledge and experience in working in an agricultural research setting dealing with cattle production and a working knowledge of farming practices, including pesticide applications and operation of farm machinery is highly desirable. Experience in large animal reproductive technologies such as AI and ultrasound examination is preferred. Desire practical experience in managing large beef animal herds and organizational skills to maintain records and assist in data collection; computer skills required.
