POSITION VACANCY ANNOUNCEMENT

Assistant/Associate Professor (Plant Breeder - Quantitative Genetics)

WORK LOCATION:  LSU School of Plant, Environmental and Soil Science (SPESS), Baton Rouge, LA.

POSITION DESCRIPTION: Tenure-track position. Responsibilities of the position include developing an innovative and competitive plant breeding program (80% research) that combines modern quantitative genetics and data science approaches with applied breeding.  The position will also develop applications of quantitative genetics and data analysis to enhance existing plant breeding and variety development activities within the LSUAC.  The breeder will have the opportunity to choose a primary crop to work with and may, over time, assume responsibility for an ongoing breeding program as the primary crop. The position will develop and optimize genomic selection protocols, high throughput phenotyping, and modern breeding technologies.  The position will assist in wheat, oat, sweet potato and sugarcane breeding programs, as appropriate, to develop genomic selection, high throughput phenotyping, and quantitative genetics applications with the goal of improving efficiency of those programs.  These programs have large data sets that may be utilized.

The position will have a 20% teaching appointment with responsibility for teaching advanced plant breeding and quantitative genetics/ genomics classes. The course content and focus will be determined in collaboration with existing plant breeders, including a rice quantitative geneticist to be hired in 2022, who will also have a teaching appointment in SPESS.  This position will collaborate with other plant breeders to enhance training and research opportunities for our plant breeding graduate students.

The position requires an understanding of the current state-of-the-art in quantitative genetics and plant breeding, and an interest in working towards real-world application through collaborative engagement with plant breeders, statisticians, computer scientists, geneticists, and researchers within LSU, as well as with external partners and academic colleagues.

There are opportunities and expectations to secure extramural funding including commodity funding support and extramural competitive funding. The successful candidate will teach (20%) graduate level courses in quantitative genetics and advanced plant breeding and be involved in graduate student training. He/she must have excellent oral and writing communication skills and be capable of effectively communicating with stakeholder groups. The incumbent is expected to have a strong commitment to mentoring undergraduate and graduate students and to serve on department and university committees. The successful faculty member is expected to publish research results in peer-reviewed journals.

QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS: An earned Ph.D. in plant breeding, with demonstrated training and ability in the application of modern quantitative genetics techniques to plant improvement. Expertise in statistical programming languages (R, SAS, MATLAB, etc.) and ability to code in at least one scripting language (Python, Perl, etc.) is important. Experience in integrating high-density genotype data sets and a working knowledge of programming skills for handling bioinformatics conduits is preferred. Knowledge of applied breeding programs and variety development is essential.

SALARY AND BENEFITS:  Salary will be commensurate with qualifications and experience. The LSU AgCenter has an attractive benefits package with a wide variety of benefit options. Benefits offered include retirement, multiple medical insurance options, supplemental insurances (dental, life, long-term disability, accident, vision, long-term care, etc.), Tax Saver Flexible Benefits Plan (saves tax dollars on some child care and medical expenses), university holidays (14 per year, typically includes a week off at Christmas), generous annual (vacation) and sick leave benefits, Employee Assistance Program, and possible educational leave and tuition exemption for coursework at campuses of the LSU System.  Specific benefits depend on job category, percent effort and length of employment.

DATE AVAILABLE:  Upon completion of the selection process.

APPLICATION DEADLINE:   May 4, 2022 or until a suitable candidate is identified.

APPLICATION PROCEDURE:  Apply online at https://lsu.wd1.myworkdayjobs.com/LSU (or in Workday for internal applicants, P00004218) by attaching cover letter along with current resume including a statement of professional interest and research plan and a statement describing how diversity would figure into your research and extension activities, university transcripts, and three letters of reference.
