The Plant Science Department is seeking applications for an Assistant or Associate Professor for the Potato Variety Program.
The successful applicant will lead the Potato Variety Development Program at the University of Idaho. This program is part of the Northwest Potato Variety Development Program, which is a collaborative research effort among the USDA-ARS, Washington State University and Oregon State University. While this position will work in close collaboration with the USDA-ARS Potato Breeding and Genetics Program located at Aberdeen, the focus is on agronomic research and development of management guidelines for new potato varieties, not breeding. Excellent opportunities also exist for collaboration with faculty in horticulture, entomology, nematology, as well as plant breeding, physiology, pathology and molecular biology.
The successful applicant will develop an innovative, internationally recognized, industry-responsive research program focused on completing agronomic studies as a part of developing and commercializing new potato varieties that will directly benefit all segments of the potato industry in Idaho, nationally and internationally.
Scholarship & Creative Activities:
- Conduct agronomic research designed to develop management guidelines that will facilitate industry adoption of new cultivars.
- Conduct field trials to determine the agronomic performance of advanced clones, as well as nutritional, phytochemical, and processing and culinary quality characteristics.
- Develop improved potato varieties that will be successfully adopted by the processing and fresh-pack industries.
- Additional research may include but is not limited to determining agronomic and physiological responses of advanced potato clones to environmental conditions and cultural variables and other aspects of genotype-by-environment/management interactions.
- Secure extramural grant funding to support the research program and participate in graduate student research.
- Publish findings in high-quality refereed journals and present findings at professional research meetings.
Outreach & Extension:
- Summarize results of research trials into management guidelines and presenting those to clientele in presentations at educational meetings, publication of popular press articles and development of extension bulletins.
- Work directly with industry adopters of newly released varieties to ensure knowledge of management recommendations.
- Work with industry advisory committees and document priorities and impacts of extension programming through annual reporting to the plan of work.
A Ph.D. in agronomy, horticulture, crop science, plant physiology, plant science, or closely related field.
Demonstrated experience with agronomy, physiology, pest management or cultivar development.
Track record of initiating, completing and publishing research findings.
Track record of securing external grant funding to support the research program
Demonstrated ability to collaborate effectively with colleagues and industry personnel as part of a team.
Demonstrated excellent written and verbal communication skills.
Must meet the eligibility requirements for rank of Assistant Professor or Associate Professor upon hire.
Experience developing and implementing Extension programs.
Demonstrated experience working on an agronomically important crop or experience in potato production systems.
Demonstrated qualifications to meet tenure at the rank of associate professor in an academic unit with the College if hired at that rank.
Physical Requirements & Working Conditions:
Ability to work in adverse environmental conditions and work effectively with plant and soil materials that may contain pollen, dust or other irritants.
