POSITION VACANCY ANNOUNCEMENT

Plant Pathology

WORK LOCATION: H. Rouse Caffey Rice Research Station, LSU AgCenter, Crowley, Louisiana

POSITION DESCRIPTION: This is a full-time 12-month, tenure-track position with a 90% research and 10% extension appointment focused on rice disease management in Louisiana. The position will have 20% appointment in the Department of Plant Pathology and Crop Physiology. The candidate will be expected to fully participate in the Department of Plant Pathology and Crop Physiology’s graduate program, and serve as a major advisor and on advisory committees for Ph.D. and M.S. students. The successful candidate must interact with agricultural agents, consultants, and industry partners to identify, develop, and implement critical integrated disease management projects for the immediate needs of rice farmers in Louisiana. Collaboration with research and extension faculty within Louisiana and with national experts on important issues will be encouraged as well as formal participation in multi-disciplinary, regional, or national research initiatives. Results of research projects are expected to be published in peer-reviewed journals, other scientific/technical publications, and extension outlets. Extramural funding to support the activities of the position should be solicited from federal and state agencies, commodity (state and national) research boards, and agro-industries.

The successful candidate will be expected to develop applied and mission-oriented research programs focused on integrated rice disease management at the H. Rouse Caffey Rice Research Station, as well as assist in research on rotational crops. Included in these efforts, he/she will be expected to work collaboratively with faculty in the H. Rouse Caffey Rice Research Station and the LSU AgCenter’s Plant Pathology and Physiology Department in addressing industry needs and coordinating rice variety development. Research, extension, and outreach responsibilities will include north and south Louisiana. He/she will develop, refine, and disseminate LSU AgCenter recommendations and provide current content to a variety of extension media including but not limited to: commodity web pages, social media, agricultural trade magazines, and traditional extension methods (newsletters, blogs, oral delivery, and formal extension publications). Additional duties include participation in professional and technical meetings and other outreach as is necessary to inform producers, industry personnel, and other research scientists of project activities and findings. This faculty member will report to the Resident Coordinator of the H. Rouse Caffey Rice Research Station.

QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS: A Ph.D. in plant disease management, epidemiology and control, or related discipline from an accredited college or university. The applicant must have a solid professional background, publication history, and a clear vision of applied translational research. The applicant must demonstrate effective oral and written communication skills. Knowledge of public relations, media experience, and field research experience are highly desirable characteristics. Ability to work with others is essential as is the ability to function with minimum supervision.
