Research Associate
(Oat/Wheat Breeding and Genetics)

(This is a grant-funded, non-tenure track position, Continuation of appointment is dependent on funding, job performance, and continued need for the appointment.)

Work Location: School of Plant, Environmental and Soil Sciences, Louisiana State University AgCenter, Baton Rouge, Louisiana.

Responsibilities: This position will assist in all aspects of the oat and wheat breeding and genetics program with the objective of developing improved winter oat and wheat varieties for the Southeastern US market with enhanced grain yield, disease resistance, and forage and food quality attributes. The associate will coordinate the International Oat Nursery (ION). The ION is an international oat germplasm exchange system with approximately 30 national and international collaborators. The associate will be responsible for making crossing and developing germplasm for the nursery; taking notes in the field, assisting with field harvest, putting together the nursery each year for shipment; obtaining phytosanitary certificates for shipment; and coordinating a summer off-season nursery in Idaho.

Responsibilities of the position also include processing data and entering reports on a national database as well as maintaining a website for the ION. The associate will be expected to interact with all other members of the wheat and oat breeding project as well as regular communication with ION participants. Good communication skills and the ability to work with others is essential.

Qualification Requirements: Baccalaureate degree in Agronomy, Plant Breeding, Horticulture, Plant Pathology or closely related field or baccalaureate degree and suitable experience in applied plant breeding or closely related field. The candidate must be able to occasionally travel to nursery sites.
Salary and Benefits: Salary will be commensurate with education and experience. The LSU AgCenter has an attractive benefits package with a wide variety of benefit options.
