The North Willamette Research and Extension Center is seeking a Director. This is a full-time (1.00 FTE), 12-month, professional faculty position.
The North Willamette Research and Extension Center (NWREC) is located within the Willamette Valley and features world-class horticulture and crop sciences field research. The 160-acre research and Extension center is home to several faculty and program specialists and serves farmers in the north Willamette Valley area. The station is about 20 miles south of Portland and serves the seven surrounding counties focusing on high-value crops. Approximately 40% of Oregon’s farmgate value is produced within 50 miles of NWREC.
The center’s research and education programming is focused on the region’s most important crop systems: nurseries and greenhouses, fresh vegetables and specialty seed crops, berries and small fruit, Christmas trees, orchard crops, and field crops associated with large and small farms. In addition, NWREC is the location for the state’s only IR-4 Pesticide Registration program, which works with many of the state’s agricultural crops throughout Oregon.
This appointment develops, implements, oversees, and assesses research and Extension programs of NWREC in support of the College of Agricultural Sciences and Oregon State University. The Director has responsibility and authority for all station programs and major decisions, including, but not limited to, vision and direction for the center, strategic planning, fiscal management, and facilities development.
The Director is charged with determining resource needs and priorities, developing and managing the NWREC budget, and participating in strategic planning efforts as part of the College of Agricultural Sciences management team.
The Director is responsible for supervising or directing supervision of all staff and faculty at NWREC. Supervision includes planning, assigning, and approving work; rewarding/disciplining; responding to grievances; hiring/firing (or effectively recommending); preparing and signing performance evaluations/reviews of all employees, including classified, temporary, professional, and academic faculty. The Director determines the center’s organizational structure and job content/responsibilities. The Director is responsible for identifying all employees’ training and professional development needs and making appropriate arrangements and/or recommendations for training and professional development.
There is an expectation for research and scholarship in this position. Expected scholarly outcomes include the development of research proposals and contracts, publication of reports and journal articles, development of patents, presentations at scientific conferences, graduate education, and/or other trainee education.
The Director serves as the primary liaison between OSU and local community stakeholders. The Director has the responsibility for maintaining strong relationships with stakeholder groups and serving as the contact between the local community and the College of Agricultural Sciences to advance the mission of Oregon State University. The Director provides strong, positive local relationships with county governments, elected and appointed county/state/federal officials, and regional stakeholders. Stakeholders include organizations and individuals with whom OSU collaborates (clients, advisers, and others who share or benefit in the assessment, design, delivery, and evaluation of learning opportunities with OSU). The Director will facilitate agricultural and community educational services and opportunities within the community. The Director will proactively engage with industry personnel and growers to address local agricultural needs and challenges, work in partnership with the NWREC Advisory Council and seek their input in priority setting and management decisions as appropriate, participate on committees and other professional activities with the College of Agricultural Sciences (CAS), University, governmental agency, and community.
The Director ensures center compliance with university policy, industry standards, and State and Federal regulations, participates in and communicates with external organizations that promote and support the center’s research efforts, including civic and governmental agencies, commissions, councils, industry partners, and community organizations.
