  • Assistant/Associate Professor - Weed Science
    Rapides Parish
    LSU Agricultural Center

The LSU AgCenter is actively seeking a dynamic individual to join our faculty in a 12-month, tenure track position with a 75% extension and 25% research appointment. The successful candidate will be responsible for developing a producer-focused extension and research programming focusing on weed management issues affecting agronomic field crops important to the state and region such as corn, cotton, grain sorghum, oats, peanuts, soybean, and wheat. This position is expected to develop an extension program working with advisory committees, Agriculture and Natural Resource parish agents, and agricultural industry representatives across Louisiana to identify stakeholder needs, develop programs that respond to those needs, and to access program impact on stakeholders. The position will support stakeholder visits, demonstrations, workshops, and educational meetings. The position will contribute to and disseminate LSU AgCenter recommendations through web-based content, social media, agricultural trade magazines, and traditional extension methods (newsletters, blogs, oral delivery and formal extension publications). This position will work closely with other weed science faculty to annually update the Louisiana Suggested Chemical Weed Management Guide and publish weed management extension publications.

The successful candidate will be expected to develop a research program primarily focused on agronomic field crops (corn, cotton, grain sorghum, oats, peanuts, soybean, and wheat) grown in the Louisiana Atchafalaya and Red River Valleys but is highly encouraged to implement research throughout Louisiana as needed to help develop weed management programs for Louisiana agronomic crop producers. They must interact with commodity and agricultural industry partners to identify, develop, and implement critical research projects. Collaboration with research and extension faculty within Louisiana, as well as with national experts on issues of shared interest and importance will be encouraged. Formal participation in multi-disciplinary, regional, or national research initiatives will be expected. Results of research should be published in peer-reviewed journals and other scientific/technical publications. Extramural funding to support the activities of the position should be solicited from federal and state agencies, commodity (state and national) research boards, and agricultural industries. They are expected to actively participate in graduate education by chairing graduate committees, serving on graduate committees, supervising thesis and dissertation research, and publishing results with their graduate students.

Work Location: This position will be domiciled at the Dean Lee Research and Extension Center near Alexandria, Louisiana, with statewide extension responsibilities for agronomic crop weed science programming. The faculty member will report to the Central Region Director of the LSU AgCenter.

Qualification Requirements: A Ph.D. in weed science or other closely related agricultural field of study is required. Documented training in weed science research and agronomic crop production practices is critical to the success of the position. Applicants should have demonstrated effective oral, written, and electronic communication skills necessary for presentations to a variety of audiences using various methods of communication. Evidence of successful grantsmanship, extension and research activity, and stakeholder interaction will be important considerations. The ability to multi-task and work in a team environment with extension and research faculty representing other disciplines is critical.

Salary and Benefits: Salary will be commensurate with qualifications and experience. The LSU AgCenter has an attractive benefits package with a wide variety of benefit options. Benefits offered include retirement, multiple medical insurance options, supplemental insurances (dental, life, long-term disability, accident, vision, long-term care, etc.), Tax Saver Flexible Benefits Plan (saves tax dollars on some child care and medical expenses), university holidays (14 per year, typically includes a week off at Christmas), generous annual (vacation) and sick leave benefits, Employee Assistance Program, and possible educational leave and tuition exemption for coursework at campuses of the LSU System. Specific benefits depend on job category, percent effort and length of employment.

Date Available: Upon completion of the interview process.

Application Deadline: September 10, 2024 or until a suitable candidate is identified.

Application Procedure: Apply online at LSU AgCenter Careers (or through Workday for internal applicants) by attaching files containing a letter of application describing abilities, research and teaching interests and experience, and vision for the research and teaching components of the position along with your curriculum vita, official university transcripts, and three letters of reference.
