    JOB DESCRIPTION SUMMARY
    The backup veterinarian is required to cover for the Attending Veterinarian when he/she is unavailable.

    Provide backup veterinary health care for laboratory animals in the vivarium facilities at the Life Sciences and Bioengineering Center and PracticePoint at Gateway Park. Assist in monitoring animal health and welfare in compliance with the Animal Health and Welfare Act and help maintain facilities to AAALAC/OLAW/USDA standards. Interacts effectively and professionally with all levels of personnel within WPI.

    JOB DESCRIPTION

    PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:



    • Provide Veterinary Care when the Attending Veterinarian is unavailable.

    • Evaluate animal health and provide preventative/therapeutic measures including medical, surgical, routing, and emergency procedures and diagnostic work-ups, as warranted

    • Necropsy animals as warranted

    • Report all animal care concerns and become involved in the resolution and appropriate corrective action, when necessary

    • Ensure compliance with approved protocols

    • Perform all other duties as assigned




    MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:



    • VMD or DVM degree

    • Current Massachusetts state veterinary licensure

    • Federal and Massachusetts state veterinary accreditation

    • 3-5 years' experience in laboratory animal medicine and/or veterinary clinical medicine and surgery preferred

    • Experience with rodents, amphibians, fish and swine preferred

    • Nights and weekend as needed




    ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS:



    • Physical demands: standing, walking, reaching, climbing, lifting (50 lbs.), carrying, writing, pushing, hearing, squatting/kneeling, sitting, speaking, seeing, using hands frequently.

    • Physical environment exposure to: animals, noises, chemicals, biohazardous material, ambient temperature, carcinogens, fumes/gasses, dirt, radiation, animal tissue/fluids.

    • Mental demands: reading, irregular work schedule, frequent contact with people, frequent interruptions, detailed work, periods of concentrated attention, multiple concurrent tasks, frequent deadlines.
